2Muddy Coffee
By Just My Op
I picked up one of these filters at my local grocery store when I needed to buy more paper filters. I thought this would be a nice alternative.I like the theory, but in practice, the filter doesn't work for me for a couple of reasons. If you use pre-ground coffee, the canned stuff you buy in grocery stores, the bottom of the pot has a lot of sediment in it and is quite gritty. I throw out the bottom cup or so of coffee, so any savings gained by not buying single use paper filters are offset by wasted coffee. And even though I bought the larger size cone, it is quite a bit smaller than the cone that holds the paper filter in my pot. I can't make a full pot without the filter overflowing with water and washing grains directly into the pot, not through the filter.Had I known these problems before I bought the filter, I probably would have passed it by. As it is, it's handy for when I run out of paper filters but not as good as I'd hoped and expected.

5More affordable, same quality
By Pamela K. Apfelbeck
I am a steam espresso machine user who was forced to shop around when the quality of the product diminished in recent years. Our biggest reason for replacing a machine is it quits frothing milk, despite vinegar or cleaning or steaming through the wand after finishing with the milk frothing. I learned since starting the latte/cappacino process that I perhaps didn't run enough steam through it when finished, but the steam machines have limited capacity before water and steam run out unless you refill. I rarely had time for that.I tried a pump espresso machine a couple years ago and didn't care for the taste--the coffee was too weak and I didn't like how it steamed milk. So recently I tried a Saeco Via Venezia which was okay--the coffee tasted bitter, though I tried a different grind and it was some better. But for the money I felt it wasn't worth it, so returned it after a week of trying.Having second thoughts about going back to the steam machine, I noticed this machine is cheaper and read that the internal components are the same as some of the Saeco models. So I tried this and it's working for us. The housing is cheaper but I don't care. It's smaller than some which works for my space. And one can tell by how it pumps espresso it is as good as the more expensive ones (including the Via Venezia I tried).A con for me is the steaming wand. I don't like it as well as the Via Venezia black plastic one because we like more foam and air in our milk. The factory wand is good enough, but I decided to buy a black plastic turbo frother (same as comes on Via Venezia) to see if it would fit the tube. It does and gets the milk exactly like we want it (more foam). Disadvantage is it hangs even lower so you can't fit a pitcher under it. I am elevating my machine (or you could rotate it and have the pitcher come up at the edge of the counter). For me it's worth it and I had to elevate my steam machine for the same reason. This steam tube doesn't articulate up and down, just side to side, but for me it's not an issue. So, I tried Ascaso Basic and don't care for it--maybe I didn't use it correctly? I tried Saeco Via Venezia and it's fine--works the same as this but has frothing wand on the left side, water tank isn't too accessible (but is bigger), and has more stainless steel. I think its portafilter is chrome plated brass (heavier, "better"). It's wider and harder to move around/takes up more space. This Saeco Poemia is narrower, lighter, plastic housing plated with stainless so looks nice but is "cheaper." The internal components are the same but the portafilter is, I guess, stainless (lighter weight). However, I do not see a difference and like what this puts out just fine. It is as good at least as the Via Venezia's output. The top lid that covers the water container easily bounces off if you touch it but goes back on quickly (instead of being hinged). And the front drip tray comes off easily IF you bump it, but again goes back easily. To me, these factors are just things to learn about using it, not disadvantages, because I like the lighter weight and size of it!IN SUMMARY: We are 4 oz./cup steam espresso users who couldn't get enough punch in our coffees with some pump machines, but don't care to resort to nonpressurized portafilters that require tamping and talent to "dial in a shot." That's over the top for us, so I got a pressurized portafilter and fill it with less than 2 scoops, tamp it lightly (very) with the included scoop/tamp, and brew. We end up with maybe 3 or 3.5 ounces per coffee cup and can steam plenty of milk for each of us. I use a 12 oz. pitcher for my cup but might need the space of the 20 oz. for my husband's larger coffee cup.The advantage to these pump machines is they have tanks of water, so no more sweating about limited steam production or time. The advantage to this Poemia is the reliable Saeco boiler and components. If you find the frothed milk isn't "frothed" enough (playing with it by raising it closer to the surface of the milk then back lower increases froth quantity), you can nab a turbo frother for Saeco/Gaggia (Saeco/Gaggia Pannarello (1230)Product No.: SA227431350) for about $10 to $20. Even if you buy that, this machine is cheaper than ones that cost a hundred+ more.NOTE: It is important to release the water from the steam wand first, then froth milk, or you get water in it that dilutes it. Just steam into an empty container for a few seconds to vent the water. Also, if you steam milk first, then brew coffee, be sure to run steam a few seconds until the steam light is out. This is called temperature surfing and lowers the boiler's temperature to brew temp so it's just right. Always run steam through the steam wand after finished steaming milk, until water runs out, to refill the boiler, because steaming empties it. (Read section 4.5 of the owner's manual about refilling the boiler.) These steps just take a few seconds, once you learn them, and keeps the boiler from being drained and damaged.

5What a great little machine!
By Valentin
This is a great espresso machine on a budget. I previously got a De'Longhi BAR32 Retro and returned it after a week of struggling to get good espresso trying any kind of tamping and grounding techniques. The Poemia is so much better. The key is that the portafilter is pressurized and there is no need to tamp the coffee grounds precisely. There is a valve that automatically opens when the pressure is optimal for brewing. The espresso comes out with great crema. I was able to even make the so called 'long espresso' (running the machine until I get 5-6 ounces instead of 2-3) while still keeping great taste and crema. The user manual contains an error in the description how to prepare the machine for first use or after a prolonged period of non use. It says to lock only the portafilter without the coffee grounds basket and run the machine until it is out of water. This of course will not seal the filter and the hot water will spray out of the filter. The coffee grounds basket has to be inside the portafilter.Lets hope this thing will last, I will update the review if something happens.UPDATE 9/19/2012.I got a used Saeco (or Starbucks) non pressurized portafilter from eBay. It turned out I like it more this way. I no longer use the original pressurized filter. Either way the espresso I'm getting is still better that the one from the De'Longhi BAR32 I tried and returned.

3Cute, but more of a toy than a serious machine
By Brian Henselman
We have owned numberous espresso machines including Starbucks Barista (Seaco), a couple of DeLonghi's, and a couple of Cuisinart EM-100's.This is a much smaller unit than either the Barista or the Cuisinart. It's much more like a DeLongi as it has a small water reservoir and has a faux stainless finish plastic case.It uses a lighter weight Saeco pressurized portafilter than the Starbucks Barista. Unfortunately, their is practically no crema. Our backup Philip Senseo makes better crema.Disappointed for the price, but will keep it for a vacation home unit to make cheap lattes as the foamer wand works well.

5Saved me from the machines!
By A Reader
I finally went to this method of making coffee after many different versions of coffee makers: Mr. Coffee, Buhn, Pods, Keurig, and out-of-manufacturing versions. All had great qualities but ended up having fatal flaws such as breaking, spitting steam, overflowing grounds basket, or mineral build up.I went to a coffee press but I didn't like all the mess of the grounds. Then the light went on about when I had lived in Germany. My mother-in-law had a simple coffee maker by Melitta using Number 4 cone Melitta filters.I found this simple version in my local grocery store using #2 cone filters. I love it. I especially love the improvement of this one over my mother-in-law's old version in that you can see the coffee level in the mug under the filter holder.I highly recommend all the manual, simple drip Melitta coffee makers I own. I own the black #2 cone filter holder (single serve) on a black mug, the red #2 cone filter holder (single serve) on a red mug, and the Melitta CoffeeMaker CM-10/6 which uses a #6 cone filter.

5Makes a great latte!
By Olpdog
I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I like the occasional cup to wake me up in the morning. I used to drink regular coffee, but after trying a mocha latte at my nearby coffee shop, I changed that to may favorite occasional coffee product. I don't drink it everyday, so I wasn't looking for a high priced machine to make a "perfect" latte, I figured an average latte would be good enough. I purchased this Mr. Coffee Espresso Maker from my local Walmart, as well as some preground dark espresso grinds. I got some chocolate syrup and followed some simple instructions I found online. I frothed up some milk (I was very surprised at how well this little machine frothed my milk!), filled up the filter with the grinds, tamped with a $5 tamper I purchased at Amazon & started the espresso process. There was some creme on the top of the shot after the espresso had finished, which was another positive surprise for me. I poured the espresso into my coffee mug, which I had already put the chocolate syrup into, and mixed the espresso & syrup with a spoon. Then I poured the frothed milk into the mug. Another quick mix and I tasted it. I was very surprised at the good flavor & even more surprised at how smooth the latte was. I've been using it for a couple months, maybe 4-5 times a week, and it still works great. I purchased some peppermint syrup from my nearby coffee shop and mix that with the chocolate syrup prior to pouring the liquids in and it tastes even better. I've done a lot of research into espresso machines and I am trying to convince myself to purchase a "higher quality" machine, but I just can't do it until this machine fails. If it were to fail today, I'd still be very happy with the usage I've gotten out of it for the price paid for it. I got a burr mill for Christmas (which cost significantly more than this machine), as well as a bag of espresso beans, which I will use as soon as my preground espresso grinds run out, and see how that affects the flavor of my lattes. I'm fairly sure freshly ground beans will add some great flavor as compared to the preground version. It's also very easy to clean. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to make a good espresso at home who doesn't want to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on an espresso machine.

4Metal Carafe
By Review
Since the dimensions are not clear, to let anyone interested that this is the exact size of the regular small glass carafes and will fit perfectly. It pours without dribling or spilling a drop. It does not have a lid but that is not a concern with my situation. It is also very easy to clean. The workmanship is very good with a strong handle firmly secured but the gauge of the metal could be heavier as it sits flimsly on the counter and could fall and get dented and I took one star away for that.Overall it is a great substitute for the glass carafes that can break and cause injury with glass splinters.

Love that I can't break this. Marks inside let you know how much water. Good for frothing too. I store my expresso machine in a Lazy Susan, so I have broken the glasd too often.

2Cheap construction
By Skychaser
I bought two of these for my girlfriend after she had broken a couple of the glass carafes. It seemed to be the perfect solution since the price was the same as a glass replacement. To my disappointment, the handles became loose after a few days, and one of the handles fell off within a week. There is no set screw. The plastic handle just jams onto a welded projection on the side. I couldn't get it to seat firmly, so I had to super-glue it back on. I removed the handle on the second carafe and glued it back on also, rather than have a loose handle that might come off when the carafe is full of hot coffee. Who knows how long the repairs will last. We do not have a dishwasher and we have not dropped or mis-handled the items. It's a pity because the solid stainless-steel body should last a lifetime, and should be safer than a glass carafe. The Chinese manufacturer either sells a cheaply-made product without any regard for customer safety, or deliberately makes the item flimsy so that it will break quickly and need replacement.

1Watch out for your fingers!!!
By Jeannie Marie
I thought the only problem with this grinder was that it didn't grind up the beans completely until the grinder kept going even when the lid was removed! I had this grinder less than 30 days and, needless to say, it has been returned. At the speed these things grind they have to have safety features that work. It was an intermittent problem but even once is too often if you have to unplug the thing to get it to stop.

This Black & Decker CBG100S Coffee Grinder needs to be recalled!Mine worked just fine for about 6 months and then it malfunctioned the last time I used it. It ran without me pushing the on button and it continued to run without the lid in place. I think this is very dangerous! I have been using it about 4 times a week, and only for coffee beans. It had never been dropped or anything. It was clean and there is no reason for it to have done this.
