Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel

Product Description

Brew a single or double espresso using either ground espresso or pods with this programmable espresso maker. The unit's 15 bars of pressure deliver consistently authentic espresso with excellent crema, while its stainless-steel steam nozzle makes it easy to turn an espresso drink into a frothy cappuccino or latte. Pre-programmed cup sizes include 1-1/2 ounces and 3 ounces. The espresso maker's 64-ounce reservoir removes for easy filling, and its steam button functions separately for convenience. Other highlights include a cup-warming tray on top, a removable drip tray and cover for easy cleanup, and a porta-filter holder with a locking mechanism, which makes it possible to quickly pump out wet grounds after each use. Accessories include a stainless frothing cup and a tamping tool with a measuring spoon. Beautifully designed in professional stainless-steel housing with an embossed Cuisinart logo, the espresso maker measures 10-1/2 by 9-1/4 by 12-3/4 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

From the Manufacturer

With the EM-200, Cuisinart lets you prepare gourmet quality espresso at home. With a programmable system that allows you to pre-select serving size, 15 bars of pressure for maximum flavor, and the option of using ground espresso or pods, you’re in control. A separate steam function and stainless steel nozzle make it easy to froth milk for cappuccinos and smooth lattes. With a removable drip tray and cover, and a portafilter holder with a locking mechanism that makes it easy to dispose of wet grounds after use, clean up is also quick and simple.

The Quest for a Perfect Espresso

It is generally agreed that there are four basic elements critical to the perfect cup:
  1. Water: When brewing espresso, make sure the water flows through the filter at the correct pace. The water flow can be adjusted by varying the pressure with which the coffee is tamped in the filter or by altering the grind of coffee. If the speed of the water is slow, the coffee will be over extracted and will be very dark and bitter, with a spotted and uneven crema (froth) on the top. If the speed of the water flow is too fast, the coffee will be under-extracted and the supreme flavor will not develop. The coffee will be diluted and there will be an inadequate amount of crema on the top.
  2. Coffee: While the bulk of the liquid is water, all of the flavor should be from the coffee. To achieve the same great quality of coffee you receive at a cafe, you need to use the same quality beans. If you choose to grind your own beans, buy the beans fresh and whole, only about a two week supply at a time for maximum freshness. Once the coffee bean is broken, its flavor degrades very quickly. If it is not practical to buy smaller supplies, we recommend you separate larger amounts of beans and store them in airtight containers in a cool, dry area. They should not be kept for longer than 1 month as flavor will diminish. Do not refrigerate or freeze coffee beans.
  3. Grind: The grind of the coffee is critical for proper flavor extraction. If using a pre-ground coffee, be sure to purchase an espresso grind that is specifically for espresso/cappuccino machines. If the grind is too fine, over extraction and bitterness will occur with a spotted and uneven crema on top. If the grind is too coarse, the water will pass through too rapidly and there will be an inadequate amount of crema on the top of the espresso.
  4. Tamping the Coffee Grounds: If you choose to use ground espresso instead of pods, tamping the coffee is a very important part of the coffee-making process. Use the scoop supplied to fill the filter basket, then using the tamping tool, tamp down the grounds with moderate pressure. Add more coffee and tamp again if necessary to bring coffee to level. Do not overfill the filter basket. The ground coffee should be tamped with moderate pressure. If the coffee is not tamped securely, there is a chance the water will flow through the coffee to rapidly and the coffee will be under-extracted. Note: if the coffee is tamped too firmly, the water will flow through the coffee too slowly and the coffee will be over-extracted.

Programming Your Espresso Machine

This Cuisinart espresso machine has programming capabilities. Based on cafe settings, the single and the double espresso functions are set to 1.5 and 3 ounce. However, by following a few simple steps, you can pre-program your perfect serving size down to the ounce. Easy to follow steps with illustrations are included in the Instruction Book.

Milk Texturing

Milk texturing is the steaming of milk. The steam does two things; its heats the milk and mixes the air with the milk for form a foamy texture. As with learning to make an espresso, perfecting the art of milk texturing takes time and practice.

5Great machine, here's my notes...
By Kirk T. Morger
I've had this machine now 4 months. I've had many machines before it, including the ever popular DeLonghi. This is an amazing machine, but there are a few things to know.1. All espresso machines, and even some coffee machines, need to be primed. If there is water in the tank, yet it's not pumping but making noise, chances are you just need to prime it. Turn the steam knob just like in the manual, and if it fails, try again. You only have to do this when you first get the machine, or if you some how let it run dry.2. The specs list this as not coming with a tamper, that's only partially correct. It comes with a plastic scoop / tamper combo thang. Before you get too annoyed with it, I recommend ordering "RSVP Terry's Tamper" (probably advertised on the same page). It's less than 7 bucks, and the small side fits this machines portafilter perfectly.3. Some reviewers have knocked this machine because the "Filter keeps getting clogged". Here's a news flash: All espresso filters will get clogged if your grinder leaves too many fines. You can get pre-ground espresso (I recommend LaVazza InBlu, or Illy), or you can get yourself a good grinder (doesn't need to be great, as long as it grinds *evenly*). If you accidentally grind too finely, this machine comes with pins to un-clog the filter. You can save a bit of time by just rubbing your thumb over the filter aggressively while running watter over it.4. Noise. Without a doubt, this is the noisiest espresso machine I've ever owned. That said, I just purchased a Kurieg for my wife, and it is noisier and had even more trouble with it's initial priming. To the Kurieg's credit, there is no grind to mess with, and the clean up is Zero. :)Now for the stuff that Hasn't been mentioned, but if I where Cuisinart, I'd be shouting this from the roof tops...1. This machine has the most rock solid temperature across shots I've ever seen. Nothing else comes close.2. This machine has integrated pressure relief. It's not perfect, which is probably why they didn't mention it, but even Gaggia's solenoid freaks out from time to time too. Most every other manufacture with this feature charge double this machines cost. It's a big deal.3. I've been inside DeLonghis, Gaggias, and others, this thing is pretty well built. It also looks pretty nice on the outside, and has a water res that is easy to use, large enough, and above all else, leak free.4. The steam wand works well. It actually works better than my Gaggia's (which was 4 *times* as much money), but it is Different, and takes some initial practice.5. This machine has an auto power down. That's a Very Nice feature that is often overlooked on less expensive machines, and it's very handy too.6. The dosing on this thing actually works. I've had a couple other machines that claimed dosing, yet they all seemed pretty random. This one actually works and it works reliably. Before you think this is a feature you can live without, consider this: With non-dosing machines, you need to use a shot glass or some other way of eye-balling when to stop, then put into final glass for mixing. But, with dosing, you can punch up a double shot right into the final cup, and it gets it right. Every Time. How cool is That??? Very Cool! The only things I wish they did different:1. I wish the machine was quieter.2. I wish they had a non-pressurized portafilter basket option. But, when you compare that to the plus side, it's a no brainer: Buy This Machine! Not having to temperature surf, not having gooey cleanup, having a cup warmer that actually works, AUTO POWER DOWN, dosing, etc., all for the price of a used Gaggia? Just click "Add to Cart" already!

5Great so far!!
By Scott Branstetter
I read that another reviewer had trouble with her machine. Hopefully it was the exception and not the rule. It comes with a 3-year warranty, so I figure that I have reasonable protection should anything break. This is my first espresso machine and I did a lot of shopping and read a ton of reviews before deciding to buy. I was nervous about buying it because there were zero reviews at the time. However, I loved the look, liked the feature set, and believed in the Cuisinart brand. I have had the machine for a week and have used it at least once each day. So far I am extremely pleased.I had considered the DeLonghi EC155, which gets good ratings and is reasonably priced. However, it requires the operator to guess or measure the volume of espresso. I am terrible at guessing the volumes of liquids, so I liked that this machine has buttons that make a pre-set (or programmable) volume of coffee. It turns out that this is a great feature and really frees me to multi-task. In the mornings, I hit the power button, and by the time I fill the portafilter the machine is ready to brew. I hit the brew button and mix up my meal replacement shake. After the coffee is finished, I hit the steam button and pour the milk for frothing. It takes less than 30 seconds to froth and steam the milk, so I am pleased with its power. I have never run out of steam and was able to make a nice foam with very little practice. I can make my breakfast shake and a cappuccino or latte in under 10 minutes with the above process. Not bad for an amateur.Overall I am very pleased with the machine and am having a great time with it. I would recommend it based on my experience thus far.

3Excellent espresso, but weak frother
By Jonathan K. Perkins
This unit is nicely put together, with its stainless steel finish. It definitely has a quality feel to it. I had no problem with turning the steam knob, as others have mentioned. The machine makes excellent espresso, both in semi-automatic and manual modes. Good crema, excellent taste.Where this machine fall short, though, is in steam volume. It takes a long time to froth the milk, and getting it right is very hit or miss. At first I thought there was more to the art of frothing than I'd assumed, and I kept working on my technique. The best approach, I found, was to include a couple of ice cubes in the milk, to keep the temperature down as the froth built up. Results were barely satisfactory.I have since discovered that a stronger steam flow is the key to frothing effectively. I'm now using a fully automatic DeLonghi machine that makes excellent espresso and has a far more powerful flow of steam than this Cuisinart (at least the one I had).If espresso is your thing and you don't mind the manual grinding, tamping, and brewing, this is a great machine. If frothing milk is part of your favorite drink, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

5Amazing Kitchen Addition!!!
By LG
I recently purchased this brewer and I am still amazed at how quick and easy it is to use. It is small and sleek enough to keep on my kitchen counter, and it's been a conversation piece! Everyone wants to see how it works and falls in love with it. It is very quiet, fast, and brews a really great cup of coffee. It's amazing how this small and simple machine can extract so much flavour from the pods. Another aspect that I love is that it is almost instant hot water for tea, hot chocolate, or soup. The water comes out piping hot in minutes if the machine's been idle - about 30 seconds if it hasn't been, and it saves me from having to rummage for the old kettle and wait for it to come to a boil.I have heard that for some, pouring water in the brewer each time you want a cup took some getting used to, but this is another aspect I love - regardless of whether I want a quick tea before work in a small mug, or a coffee or even soup in one of my huge mugs if I'm going to laze around and read, I don't have to worry about my mug overfilling or filling only halfway. The amount of water you put in is pretty much the same amount that comes out (slightly less). There is enough room to fit a travel mug or a taller mug if need be - the bottom drip tray comes right out. It's also very clean. There are no wet filters to touch, no wet coffee grounds, and the pods are compostable! You just pull out the pod drawer and can dump it right into your green bin. Voila! Ready for another cup!I STRONGLY recommend this machine to anyone who likes new toys, hot beverages, and great quality. It really is such a simple yet amazing machine.Very much worth getting!!!

5Absolutely Wonderful!!
By Heidi
I purchased mine from Reunion Island (reunionislandcoffee.com) before it was available on Amazon, and they included about a dozen pods (including a couple of tea samples) from various companies.I've only had this machine for 3 or 4 days now, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've always hated throwing away pots of coffee from my Cuisinart (and the 10 other coffee pots I've tried) that were still half full because they tasted lackluster and were invariably bitter from staying on the burner too long. This is perfect for one or two people. I can make 1 cup at a time, which is delivered at a temperature of 200 degrees, and I can choose from a huge assortment of pods and on-line companies (try The Coffee Artisan at thecoffeeartisan.com) while feeling at ease that I'm not adding to the landfills. Love that I can use a travel mug too. It's inexpensive to buy the pods, which if you only drink about two cups a day comes out to 39 cents a cup over the course of a year for the pods. If you drink more than that, your savings are even greater. When I consider I was spending $1.35 five days a week (using my own mug and paying the 'refill' price at my local drive-thru) my savings are much more substantial. It's very easy to use and is quite attractive yet takes up less room than my other 'normal' coffee maker and it's very fast: the coffee is ready in 30 seconds. Since it's dispensing hot water, you can also use it for tea, hot chocolate, soup, etc. There is a huge amount of information and a great in-depth review of the product at a website named "Single Serve Coffee" which not only discusses this product but all the other single serve machines: [...]Fantastic product!

5Fantastic brewer
By Pat
I've had this brewer for a few days now and I feel it rivals any top of the line pod brewer. The coffee it brewers is tasty and very hot. I like the fact that it has a stainless steel tank. As indicated by another reviewer the only downside is the fact that there is no water tank resevoir but you quickly get use to it. It has good clearance for a travel mug and the grill is removable for an even taller cup. One of my better recent purchases.

5I could taste the difference
By Pigskins
I only bought this as a filler item so I could get a promotional certificate, but it turned out to be a great purchase. I really enjoy good coffee but never realized my paper filters were preventing me from tasting the coffee as good as my maker could make it. It does make a difference, the coffee tastes better, and as more flavor. The oils make the difference I guess! Guests have also commented on the flavor of my coffee. Good coffee starts with good beans and good, cold, clean water. I think it also needs this type of filter.

Hey, this filter fits my Krups coffee maker and all is well. Sure beats having to find those paper filters in the morning. My original filter finally suffered a split at the bottom of the cone; no possibility of repair.

3A stunning composition of poor design
By femgeek
I have owned quite a number of grind-and-brew coffeemakers over the last 30 years, but this one stands out as memorable ... for the astounding array of bad design decisions incorporated into one product.I bought this as a change after a few rounds of bad luck: A high-end grind-and-brew coffeemaker that died on day 363 of its year warranty (but is no longer manufactured or repaired),Saeco 10-Cup Automatic Drip Coffee Maker with Thermal Carafe and Burr Grinder, Stainless Steelfollowed by a mid-range grind-and-brew from a top manufacturer which died (stopped dripping, though the grinder still worked) after a mere six weeks of use. [Amazon was kind enough to help me get an exchange on the second coffeemaker so that I wouldn't have to spend the agonizing 6 weeks that the manufacturer reportedly takes to service that model.] Krups KM7000 10-Cup Grind and Brew Coffee Maker with Conical Burr Grinder, Black and Stainless Steel AccentsSo I thought I'd go in a new direction, and instead of buying a grind-and-brew coffeemaker with a burr grinder, I returned to the blade grinder and what I hoped would be a more durable design, much like the coffeemakers I had 20 years ago. This Cucina Romana coffeemaker uses the same basic grinder cup and lid, filter basket and holder, and charcoal filter, as several other blade-grind-and-brew coffeemakers; the design reminds me of the now-defunct Melitta product.Unfortunately, this coffeemaker has so many flaws that I find it simply annoying to use. Yes, it makes a pretty decent cup of coffee. But imagine how much I'd like it if some better decisions had been made before it was ever sent to manufacture:- In order to fill the coffeemaker with water, you open a lid that requires an astonishing 23 inches -- yes, almost two full feet -- of clearance JUST TO OPEN THE LID. Forget about putting this under any cabinets; you won't be able to open it at all, because the lid you open is the full size from front-to-back, thus contributing to this already-tall coffeemaker requiring use only on an open counter. In fact, I'd hate to be any shorter than I am and try to fill this, you have to hold the carafe so high that my arm hurts doing it.- The top lid is designed to require pushing back on a plastic catch to open it. This plastic catch is made shallow and of very slick plastic, so it's hard to get hold of and one's thumb tends to slip right off it, leaving the lid to crash down. In addition, you have to use the other hand to hold on to the coffeemaker body, or you'll never get the lid open, rather only succeed in pushing the entire coffeemaker back or tipping it over.- The LED panel is very dark and small, very difficult to read, as it's completely unilluminated.- The clock does not flash 12:00 when the coffeemaker is first plugged in as the instructions say; rather, it displays 12:00 steady, and doesn't seem to have any clear process for re-setting the time. After repeatedly pushing and holding various buttons to try to re-set the time, I finally hit on something that worked; however, the next time, I still had to go through pushing various buttons on & off to try to find what it would take to reset the time. It's not clear why there isn't a simple sequence of buttons for resetting the time, and instructions for doing so.- If you want to grind the beans when you brew coffee, you have to remember to push back an extra latch that isn't present with other such coffeemakers, just one more obscure step in the process. If you forget to push this back, the coffee grinds in the cup and doesn't exit into the basket, so you'll just get hot water.- ALL the parts have to be in this coffeemaker for it to be turned on. So if you want to make coffee with pre-ground beans, you still have to have the grinding cup in place. If you want to keep coffee hot on the burner, you have to keep the grinding cup in place. The problem with this is that you *must* clean out the grinding cup completely between every use, because otherwise by the third use, it will be so caked up with grinds that nothing will reach the filter basket. So to clean this out, I either have to remove the parts right before use and both clean and dry every part, or I have to hope I remember to clean and leave to dry all the parts in the short time that I don't have coffee on during the day (or try to remember to do it before I fall asleep at night.)It seems completely unnecessary to require the grinding cup in place just to have the burner on, especially because the cleaning after every use is absolutely necessary.- The grinding cup simply becomes thoroughly caked up with fine grounds after each and every use, both wasting coffee and making for a nasty cleaning job. You can't just rinse it, either; the coffee gets hard-caked in spots, especially the exit chute, after each use, and will only come off with significant pressure or scraping.- The small triangular plastic protrusions that hold the lid onto the carafe are exceedingly flimsy; one of them broke after two days of use, when I simply flipped the lid up slightly to pour. This is a shame, as this carafe lid is one of the few I've seen (with grind-and-brew machines) that doesn't drip all over the counter when pouring, due to a design that lets you flip the lid up slightly when pouring. In fact, if this part of the carafe hadn't been designed so flimsily as to break this way, I would've at least conceded that the carafe design on this coffeemaker was better than on most of the competing products ... most of which drip coffee during every pour.In summary, this could've been a great alternative grind-and-brew system, perhaps if the designer had thought a little bit about how it would actually be used. Most of the serious annoyances are in places where a decision was made towards lesser usability, when a small change would have made it so much easier on the actual user. For example, instead of using a shallow-lipped slick plastic catch on the lid, just something easier to grab would have avoided an obvious problem. Splitting the lid would have helped keep the height requirement down, perhaps enabling use under kitchen cabinets. And I suspect it wouldn't take much re-programming to change the issue of letting the burner stay on when removing the grinder parts (for cleaning). But instead, it is what it is. I can only hope that it, too, breaks in less than a year, so I can justify getting another brand and model. I think it's probably time that I went back to the grind-and-brew product that costs twice as much but is so easy to use and has all the features I'd ever want. Capresso 464.05 CoffeeTeam GS 10-Cup Digital Coffeemaker with Conical Burr Grinder With so few grind-and-brew products left on the market these days, it's worth the investment just to avoid the multiple daily annoyances of using the Cucina Romana.

4Grind and Brew Coffeemaker
By wildman454
Just recieived this machine as a gift from my wife. She bought it on trip to Chicago. Tried it out this morning and forgot turn the timer on. After the grinder turned off in 2 seconds (pre-ground coffee) I did not here it brewing but it did brew the coffee. The only thing I find negative about it is there is no backlight for the LED display. It is the quietest machine I have ever owned. If you follow the owners manual there should be no problems. I like it! It operated as the manual claims.

1This is the worst!
By whiterabbit
We purchased this item and within 30 days the grinder bin broke. The lever would not stick and it disabled the entire machine. We were able to get it replaced with another machine. Now, the 2nd machine, less than 6 months later, the grinder no longer works. This machine has been nothing but trouble. Very finicky to operate. Don't buy!

4Considered by Many to be the best...
By Ryan R. Moos
Why is this considered to be the best?1. It's stainless steel, ALL of it. No aluminum to leach into your espresso.2. Used in conjunction with illy, Ground Espresso Coffe, Fine Grind (Dark Roast, Black Band), 8.8-Ounce Tins (Pack of 2) , the taste cannot be beat. Pay attention, there are so many types of Illy. Get the right one!! NOTE: at the store, the can will NOT indicate that it is FINE ground. Don't worry, it is. There is a little image of an espresso machine in the bottom right of the labeling of the can.Why only 4 star?1. The handle still gets really hot. So, make sure you buy a little silicone hand grab thingy!2. When you screw the top to the bottom, where the release valve falls is inconsistent. Mine just happened to fall right underneath the handle. Not a good place for steam to be coming out (which doesn't always happen, but can).Things of note that you cannot find in the Veg Vigano instructions or on websites:1. It is critical that you only pack the FINE grained espresso just a bit. DO NOT TAMP it down like a real espresso maker. Doing so will cause too much pressure and may force the steam out of the release valve. However, if you just "drop" the grains into the little filter area, you won't get the right taste either, because they are too loose. Try it a few times, you'll see.2. Temperature is critical. If you go with really high heat, the pressure will build early and water/steam will start to release out of the release valve. BUT, too low will yield a sort of "burned" coffee taste since it sat in the maker a bit too long. Medium heat, just a tad towards high is it. I've tried it on both electric and gas. ALSO get it to the point where you can hear it gurgling in the top area, and it's time to pour.I hope these details help you all make the best espresso around. If you want to take it to the next level consider buying a Capresso frothPRO It will create foam that most coffee drinkers can only dream of (and it makes good hot chocolate, too).Top the foam with either cinnamon, or chocolate shavings? Why pay more for substandard coffee art the local Starbucks?Enjoy.

5Awesome Espresso!
By ATuxedo
I've been searching for the perfect cup of espresso since I left Italy a few months ago. This is the first stovetop espresso maker I've used that captures the true flavor of Italian caffe'. I highly recommend it.

5Great Buy-Great Seller
By Nahnah19
I LOVE my new Kontessa Oro 2-cup Coffee Pot! It works great, easy to use, and easy to clean. The only thing I recommend is that you should always clean it and leave it disassembled after each use, to allow it to dry well so that the coffee doesn't taste or smell bad.The seller packaged it very well, what you see is what you get, and it arrived very fast-within 3days!Over all- a great buy from a great seller!

5GREAT COOFFE MAKER
By Deborah M. Papallo
I normally buy only items that have many reviews and 4 or 5 stars. This coffee maker had only two reviews but I decided to take a chance especially since it could be returned within 30 days. Even though most thermal coffee makers had many good reviews, there were too many negatives for each. I am very happy with this on so far. I have not had any of the problems as with other types -- coffee is hot, stays hot for quite some time, doesn't leak, easy pouring and cleaning, the coffee is good with not plastice taste, carafe fits properly. It does beep when the coffee is done brewing. Compact size is nice. I have not used the timer and probably never will. The best part is that there is a 3 year warranty -- I hope it lasts that long!

5This Cuisinart coffeemaker has it all!
By Getitright
This coffeemaker has a compact size (small footprint) yet brews a BIG pot of coffee! In fact, the Cuisinart Compact Coffeemaker has it all: programmable (even just 1 to 4 cups), filters the water, has a gold "rinse and re-use" coffee filter, a big thermal pot, and its easy to use. Now have coffee READY when you wake up - or brew it and let it stay HOT in the THERMAL carafe! Coffee does not sit there, and BURN, on a heating element! agf! We've enjoyed ours for years with no problems! Highly recommended.

5WELL DESIGNED THERMAL COFFEE MAKER
By Suzanne C. Henderson
I held off for a while buying because of lack of reviews. I received my Cuisinart Monday, May 18 - defective out of box. I received my replacement, Wednesday, May 20. Cannot beat Amazon!!!! I've brewed one pot with no problems. Very easy to program, make coffee, and pour coffee (lid does not need to be turned, just pour as the lid locks when removed from base). Need to learn to adjust amount of coffee...coffee is hot! Beeps when finished. Easy to fill with water. Coffee maker has 3 year limited warranty. Very, very nice coffee maker.
