Bodum Assam 34-Ounce Glass Teapot with Stainless-Steel Filter

Product Description

We set out with a goal to make an innovation in tea brewing and the patented Bodum tea press system was born. Brewing loose-leaf tea or tea bags has never been easier ¿ or cleaner. The Bodum Assam Medium Tea Press serves 4 ¿ 5 people and is made from durable, heat-resistant borosilicate glass. Designed after the traditional teapot shape, the Assam embodies a more modern, spout-less look. To brew, simply set the durable stainless steel filter into the glass pot. Fill the strainer with the appropriate amount of your favorite loose-leaf tea. Pour hot water over the leaves, filling the pot. Then set the plunger/lid in place in the up position. Allow the tea to brew to your liking and then press down on the plunger. The press compresses the tea leaves below the infusion holes in the strainer; completely stopping the brewing process. The Assam Tea Press puts an end to bitter, over brewed tea. Once you press, you can rest assured that your first cup and your third cup will taste exactly the same. There's no need to remove the filter and there's no mess. What you have left is the true unforgettable and delicious taste of your preferred tea. Some teas can even be brewed a second or third time, making the Shin Cha tea press the perfect choice. Just stir up the tea leaves and fill the pot back up with hot water, repeating the process. It is a clean and easy way to enjoy loose-leaf tea whether it is black, green, white, blooming or herbal tea. The clear glass leaves the infusion remain visible at all times, making it a very attractive table piece. The Assam is dishwasher safe and the glass teapot is microwave safe. The glass Assam Tea Press is available in both small (2 cup - 0.5 l, 17 oz.) and medium (4 cup - 1.0 l, 34 oz.) sizes. This medium version has a 1.0 l, 34 oz. capacity.

3Purchased with reservations on longevity.
By R. Ocampo
Bodum design and quality has always intrigued me in both positive and negative ways. I have in the past easily broken a bodum glass item and yet I am still drawn into purchasing another product.I've wanted the Bodum Assam 34-ounce cast-iron version for longevity, but the weight of it alone is too much to handle to brew tea. So I opted for this 34-ounce glass version which is very light and, like other Bodum borosilicate glass items, delicate. I have yet to break porcelain items by simple bumps while washing, but with a Bodum I am sure to crack them in time. However, after much searching for a tea brewing device which affords functionality and simplicity, I fall for a Bodum yet again.WHY? It is only this brand that features a tea press that stops the brewing process when the desired strength has been reached.HOW? The loose leaves are placed on the center inside the stainless steel filter. When you want the brewing process to stop, the plunger pushes the leaves down the bottom of the filter away from the liquid and sealed by a silicon rubber ring surrounding the plunger. It's a simple ingenious design carried and modified from their coffee press.PROS:- Effective and ingenious plunger to create a tailored brewing strength depending on user, water volume and type of tea leaves- Despite a thin glass container, surprisingly keeps the liquid hot for a relatively long time.- Simple design makes an elegant product that matchces any interior as well as hand washing very easy.- No spill in pouring. I was afraid the small lip may cause spilling while pouring, but I experienced none. No spills travelling down the wall after pouring as well.- Glass version allows you to view the brewing the process and cater to your needs.CONS:- Thin borosilicate glass makes the tea press more fragile than you think.- Plunger design is simple, but clumsy as well. Plunger stalk has to be aligned completely vertical or pushing straight down will be met with great resistance especially as the silicon rubs against the stainless steel wall.- Loose leaves are not all contained on the bottom as some may escape thru the silicon seal and shred against the stainless steel filter wall. If this happens, the brewing process is not effectively and completely stopped. The leaves especially escape if you don't align the plunger completely vertically. (You will know what I am talking about when you own it and experience the same).VERDICT:You have a choice between an extremely heavy cast-iron version or the extremely light glass version. I wish Bodum created a thicker-walled version in glass so I can still view the brewing process and have it less fragile than most Bodum products these days. For the price, I really can't complain so I find myself purchasing yet another functional and patented Bodum product. Until another company has come up with an ingenious plunger system that is better built, I guess Bodum it will be for now.

4Style and Functionality
By David Johnston
Pro's: nice size for 2 people, easy to make tea with loose tea or tea bags, poors well, easy to clean up, pleasing to the eye and works with most kitchen decors, utilitarian with a little bit of flair.Con's: I would like to be able to remove all the stainless parts and have an all glass tea pot too, but I couldn't find a teapot with that design.

1This product is horrible; customer service is worse
By Super Consumer
I owned this product for about a month. Suddenly when I poured in hot water, the glass broke. I called customer service and they do not stand behind thier products at all. I received a sorry we are out of stock on that replacement part and there is no date when they will receive more. Basically they will not stand behind their products.

5normal for a gold filter
By Kathy
The previous reviewer is correct about the "sediment" from the filter. Typically gold filters allow the oils and other properties of the ground bean to pass though, instead of being stuck in the paper filter. This gives a darker richer coffee. It also means you have a small "shot" of more dense coffee at the end of your cup. You can either drink it or not, some people really like the taste of the gold filter, others are used to the paper and don't like it at all. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

5Perfect Fit
By Leslie
We found that the paper filters just wouldn't stay upright overnight in the basket, resulting in unattended surprise overflows and a great deal of "sediment" in the coffee and everywhere else. This filter is made for this model and fits like a glove, have yet to see one ground in my cups and the rest of the household has yet to declare any. As for taste, we haven't noted any true appreciable difference, even using high grades of coffee which are distinctive, nor in the occasional purchase of more standard grades of coffee beans. All in all, I give this five stars, for a number of reasons: Far easier to "change" the filter when you have just gotten out of bed, having forgotten to set the coffee timer the night before, just dump out old grounds and sleepy fumble the filter back, rather than the floppy paper ones wrangling; Environmentally friendly, self explanatory; Cost effective over long run, those paper filters add up; Never having to find yourself needing coffee but sans filter again and looking at the roll of paper towels for rescue; Saves space on counter and/or in the cupboard, as you don't have to store paper filters; Last but not least, I am so sick of trying to pick just ONE paper filter at a time out of the stack and coming out with multiples, more of that pesky fumbling, since they don't just pop out one like a Kleenex box does. So, in conclusion, very worth it and I recommend it.

3Replacement coffee basket
By Lou Williams
We love our Cuisinart coffee grinder/maker, but the basket which holds the grounds has worn and lets a few gounds sift out into the finished coffee. I was delighted to find the part on Amazon. It fits and looks the same until you realize it is about 1/4 inch shorter than the original. Thus when brewing a full 12 cups, it is too short to contain all the coffee grounds. You end up with the same problem as with the old basket - grounds in the brewed coffee, even though it is represented as fitting a 12-cup pot! Grrrh!

5Great espresso, incredible price!
By Jennifer Smith
I love espresso, and this little baby makes a great cup. Here are a few points that might be useful for you to know:Good points:*It doesn't take up too much room on the counter and looks nice with it's silver metal accents.*The water reservoir is a good size, you can make about 8-10 shots before you need to refill it, which is very easy to do, and there is a clear section behind the basket which shows the water level.*Fast heat-up time (only about a minute), good frothing wand, no wait time between frothing and brewing (though you do have to wait a little between brewing and frothing).Be warned:*Frothing wand is only 3 1/4 inches from the counter top. Not a big deal, I just went and bought a frothing cup that is about that height.*Distance from grounds basket to tray is only 2 1/2 inches, I usually use a small espresso cup.*Built-in tamper sucks, buy a good metal one.*You don't end up with a nice dry puck, the grounds basket is a watery soup after your espresso is made, so I dump it down the disposal.*You will end up drinking more espresso than you mean to, it's that good!Seriously, I chose this machine after a lot of online researching, and decided on this one based on its outstanding reviews and great price. What led me to it were the reviews of another DeLonghi, the EC140B, which is an older and less attractive model, but had reviews from people who had owned theirs for 6 and 10 years! I'm hoping that this one will have the same longevity.-----> UPDATE: I've now had this machine for 8 months and it started running very slow. I'd been using only distilled water, so I knew it wasn't a calcification issue, so I looked into it and it turns out machines like this one (no backflushing) need to be cleaned every month or so to remove built up grounds that work their way inside the machine. So I ran some cleaner through it and all this nasty brownish liquid came out, and now it runs great again! So remember people, take good care of your things and they will take good care of you. A lesson I am still learning...- and to answer a question commented on this review, my tamper is 2 inches in diameter.

5Process of elimination
By OhioGardener
First, a couple of disclaimers:1. This is the first pump-driven espresso machine that we have owned.2. We generally drink cafe Americano, which is an espresso with a little added hot water (or cold water with an iced Americano). We make an occasional cappuccino and have thus used the steam wand, but not extensively. After doing a cost/benefit analysis in regards to our current cafe Americano habit (~10 per week), we realized that there would be some justification to buying a home unit. We first considered the Breville ESP8XL Cafe Roma Stainless Espresso Maker, but reviewers consistently lamented the unit's tendency to clog the filter, necessitating time-consuming cleaning. Also, not being completely sure that we would actually use the espresso maker, we balked at the $250 price tag.We also considered moving up to one of the superautomatico machines that grind, tamp, brew and dispose of the grinds, but we worried about the reliability of technology that had only recently hit the consumer-grade appliances. After reading zillions of reviews, we realized that every mid-priced machine had some glaring flaw and, in the end, we decided to buy an inexpensive pump-driven unit and wait for the technology to catch up before investing a huge chunk of change in an espresso machine. Moving our investigation to low-end espresso makers, we were impressed by the reviews of the DeLonghi EC155 and purchased it from Amazon.I put off writing a review in order to make sure that the DeLonghi was going to last until we had at least broken even on it. We received it in mid-July and since then it has produced about 200 double shots flawlessly. By my reckoning, that's about $400 worth of Americanos at the local cafe. Even considering the price of the coffee, we have more than broken even. So, here's our pros and cons:PROs- Price--we paid $91.28.- Crema Production--this unit consistently produces a thick layer of delicious crema.- Powerful Stream Wand--Easily froths milk.- Mechanicals--After six months of nearly daily use this mighty-mite works as well as it did the day it arrived.- Easy Cleanup--Filter cleans easily.CONs- Ergonomics--As other reviewers have noted, there could be a little more room between the area where the cup sits and the output nozzle. Also the steam wand could be longer.- Features--No cup warmer. Not a big deal to us, especially considering the price of the EC155, but it will put off some buyers.SOME THINGS WE HAVE LEARNED- Using a coffee especially made for espresso, such as Lavazza, produces a much better espresso. Lavazza has the added benefit of allowing you to go for hours without blinking.- Preheating the unit for 15 minutes and warming the cups in the microwave improves the results and experience.

5Awesome pump driven machine for the $$
By Maddi the Pup
I was always skeptical of expensive espresso machines and wondered why anyone would pay hundreds of dollars for an expensive machine. It turns out that the more expensive and quality machines are "pump-driven" rather than the typical "steam driven" found at your local Wally World and such. A pump driven machine will hit pressures 4-5 times greater than that of a steam driven machine and gets much better extraction from the espresso grinds (better flavor) and are the only machines capable of generating the "chrema" foam at the top of the espresso. The DelLonghi EC155 is an excellent budget machine found for under $100 that is pump driven. I was happy with my old steam driven Delonghi, but once I received this I realized that I didn't even know what I was missing. This espresso is as good or better than anything you'll get in a nice Italian restaurant or at your local Charbucks. The chrema that this thing produced is flat out great (you'll get a nice 1/4 layer of tasty emulsified foam). The convenience of pulling a single shot is great too, and you really only need the machine to warm up a few minutes before you pull a shot. The best feature about this machine in my humble opinion is that it is E.S.E certified (easy serve espresso). This means that you can pick up the ESE certified pods from Charbucks or a good online pod retailer and not have to go to the trouble of grinding and tamping. This is a HUGE feature that even some more expensive machines do not have and is what eventually sold me on this unit. Having grown accustomed to the convenience of pod coffee, it was only natural to look for the same thing in my espresso machine. Do note that coffee (senseo style) pods will not work in here as those are much larger than the ESE certified pod. Try a nice blend from Baronet or another find espresso brand and you won't be sorry.I highly recommend this machine. In short, it has fantastic features for the money, makes awesome espresso chrema, and it ESE certified for pod use. You will definitely not do any better than this machine for under $100.

5It Works Great For Me
By wrbtu
I've seen other reviewers complaints about this coffee maker, but I've used it for years & haven't had any problems with it. It's easy to use, compact, & works quickly. My wife & I both drink coffee, but not the same type, so it doesn't make sense for us to use a 2+ cup coffee maker since we'd have to make two separate portions anyway. So we each have our own B&D, & use them simultaneously. The coffee comes out fine; I use Starbucks Verona (which my wife says tastes like burnt coffee from the bottom of a pot anyway), & she uses a decaff chocolate blueberry flavor. The only difficulty (& it's not a fault of the B&D) is that the #1 filters are hard to find, even on the internet, but this coffee maker comes with a permanent, dishwasher safe filter, so you really don't have to use paper filters if you don't want to. I recommend this product for anyone who wants a quick cup of coffee & doesn't need more than one cup at a time.

4Great for single cup coffee drinkers
By Golden Bear
I have used this coffee maker for over 5 years now and it's still running great. In fact, I just bought another one to take on trips & bring to the office.Pros:1. I don't have to make more than one serving at a time for myself and it brews straight into the mug.2. It comes with a permanent filter but you can also use cone filters size #1 which I can buy nearby. Less messy to clean up using the paper filter. I just toss the grounds in the trash.3. Quick to brew; done in < 5 minutesCons:1. Hard to find a replacement mug of the right size or permanent filter2. No warming element3. The grounds do soak up some water and less comes out that you put in but it also happens with larger coffee pots (which being larger, you don't notice as much because you aren't MEASURING with the same cup you drink from).Hints:1. To stop grounds from floating into the water resevoir, use drip or cone ground coffee. Avoid very finely ground (i.e., espresso)2. To avoid overflows, leave the cover off while brewing.

1Orininal one was Great - This is Junk
By 69 Coug
I am the only coffee drinker in my family and had a Brew N' Go for over 6 years when the mesh filter began to separate from the plastic. Unfortunately, Black and Decker changed the design and I was unable to find a replacement filter from them or anybody. I looked for a replacement single cup coffee maker in several retailers and finally found one on Amazon at a very reasonable price. However, newer is not better. The new model filter only has screen on the 2 sides and is mostly plastic, where as the original was mostly a fine screen with plastic reinforcement. From the very first cup it was a disappointment, as coffee grounds overflowed into my cup and throughout the coffee maker. This new design filter does not let the water pass through quick enough when you use a fine or moderate grinds of coffee. With larger grinds the coffee comes out weak, or if you try to make it stronger by adding more grinds you can have the same overflow problem! For months I would put coarse coffee in the bottom and the better fine ground coffee on top and crossed my fingers. Then the other day I was in CVS and saw a single cup coffee maker for 15 bucks. It has a mostly screen filter like the original B&D and works great! The next day I was in Big Lots and found another one that appears to use a #2 filter (so replacements can be easy in the future) and it works great for 10 bucks!!The Black and Decker is going in the trash!! Save yourself the hassle and get something else and make sure it has a lot of screen area in the filter.

5I'm no barista, but this thing's great!
By Dick Whiting
I ordered this to replace a Bialetti stove-top maker. I have had it a couple of months and it is great. I saw some reviews about some machines within this price category being flimsy and unreliable. The Imusa is terrific. Easy to clean (Bialetti was awful!), and makes up to a quad in under 5 minutes. It is lightweight, but sturdy; and makes thick rich foam, even with skim milk. I am a former chef and have had some fancy machines that cost thousands of dollars in my kitchens, Imusa gets it done for me at home. I even went back and ordered a second as a gift.Adding on to this review: If you haven't been using your old espresso/cappuccino maker because it isn't easy, or a pain to clean up, then this is the machine for you.

5Very good espresso machine
By Timothy D. Williams
I'm going to start out stating I am no barista. But I love coffee and simply don't like paying $4+ a cup and inconveniencing myself in the morning making an out-of-the-way, time-consuming stop during my commute. That said, this is my first espresso machine. As with many things I don't know if I'll ever use again, I purchase the absolute cheapest low-end model, and if I like it, I research and splurge (or ask Santa.) I feel I really lucked out with this machine since it cost half of other machines I was looking at, and it works. I followed the directions (and a youtube) and with some trial and error (actually only the first try was really bad) I am able to make espresso mocha's in the morning for my wife and I.I've gotten so good at it that I can make two cups with ~2 shots each, a squirt of chocolate syrup each, about 10oz steamed milk, and clean it all up in under 10 minutes.Notes and experiences about this machine:-When you first receive the machine, fill and drain the machine numerous times with hot water (by filling and turning the entire machine upside down.) Mine had a bunch of metallic flakes inside the steam chamber left over from manufacturing. These could definately clog the machine or worse, end up in your espresso.-Use mildly fine grounds and tamp softly. I wasn't getting any crema until I used a burr grinder on a medium-fine setting. This machine has NO control over the brew group pressure, so the only way to control extraction is with the grounds and tamping pressure. I was using too fine of grounds for the first week or two and was getting weak extraction. If tamped too hard the grounds overheat and the extraction is bitter. Ideally each shot should take 20 seconds.-The control dial has a "dead zone" where steam continues to come out, but the boiler is off. It is between OFF and LOW STEAM settings. This allows you to safely release pressure in the boiler chamber when you're finished. Never leave the machine sit with pressure in it. The instructions don't mention anything about this 'hidden' setting, but you will find it and use it every time you use the machine for one reason or another.-Tamping the grounds is important. At first I used my fingers. Then a spoon. Finally I got a tamper. All of them were effective but a tamper makes me feel like a pro and its definately the fastest/easiest. 50mm is a good fit. Not perfect, but good enough; in reality its probably a 51mm or 52mm.-Don't use the rubber guard for the frothing wand. It's hard to clean. Not just hard, impossible. Also, if not removed and cleaned after every use, it will for sure trap bacteria; it obviously needs to be removed to clean your frothing wand, which you want to clean while its hot so stuff doesn't cake on it, defeating the entire purpose of protecting you from burns since you need to deal with the hot wand, anyway. Just throw this thing away.-Clean it while its HOT. I rinse and wipe everything right after a session. The steam wand, grounds cup and locking cup, the collection cup and the waste tray all rinse clean with no soap when they're hot. The steam wand takes about 10-15 seconds of wiping to get milk residue off; everything else takes a few seconds.

5One great little machine
By Coppermoon
For the money, this is one great little machine. It heats quickly, foams the milk easily and promptly, is easy to clean up, and looks cute on the counter. This is our fourth (and least expensive) cappuccino maker - it is also the best.

2Some like it hotter
By Stonefarmer
I guess you can't have it all with a 12 volt appliance. Just wanted a better cup than what the truck stops offer, but the thing takes such a long time to brew the mug full and there's no lower heating element...okay if you want it black, but it's barely warm if I add creamer.

5Works Perfect!!
By Michael
It does make steaming HOT coffee, however I when I compare it to my home coffee maker the only difference is the home coffee comes out burning hot to where I got to wait about 5 mins for it to cool down enough to drink it. So if I had to guess I would say this coffee maker makes it maybe 5 degrees cooler. But again it's hot enough and you won't be disappointed. As far as brew time in under 15 mins. I timed it and its more like 17 mins. The quality seems on par with your typical home coffee makers. I think it's a really nice bonus that it comes with a stainless steel 16 ounce mug, reusable filter and measuring spoon. It even has a lower heating element. Do not listen to the negative reviews, they most likely got a defective unit and did not want to exchange it. If you're on the fence about this, I say go ahead and buy it. Also save your receipt it does have a 1 year warranty.
