4Slightly Fussy Lid, but the BEST Coffee-Maker I've Ever Used
By Anita Weiner
Fussy Lid, but the Best Coffee Maker Ever!, April 23, 2005Reviewer: R. Wilner (Metro Detroit) - See all my reviewsI wish Amazon had 1/2 stars, because I would have given 4 1/2. I almost gave it a 5 star rating, but the lid may bug some people. I will admit that the lid MUST be placed in a perfect position, but how to do it is no mystery. Clearly etched in the top of the lid are the words "Open" "Close" and "Pour." If you put the lid on so that the word "Pour" is directly over the spout, it's no problem. When you go to screw on the lid, just make sure that the word "Pour" starts out over the spout and when it's closed, it will end up there. No big deal. My guess is, the people who have given negative reviews about the lid were impatient with it.My reason for buying this coffee-maker was the 12-OUNCE thermal carafe. This was one of the only coffee-makers I saw with a 12oz carafe as opposed to an 8 or 10 ounce. This was a huge selling point for me. As someone who nurses a whole pot a coffee a day, I also was attracted to the fact that I read it keeps coffee hot for so long.I have had the coffee-maker for over a month now, and I am NOT disappointed! I have not had one single overflow incident and I have had no problems. I suspect that those with overflow problems overfilled the reservoir or didn't pay attention to how they put the lid on.One thing I must share with those of you considering this coffee-maker. One day I made a pot of coffee and I forgot about it. The next day, approximately 36 hours later, I remembered I had made coffee the previous day, so I figured I'd pour a cup and microwave it. Microwaving was unnecessary. The coffee came out STEAMING hot. As if I had just made it! I'm sure the more coffee that is in it the hotter it will keep but this was over a day later!I HIGHLY recommend this product!PROS-No heating mechanism. No burnt tasting coffee!-Once coffee is brewed, the coffee-maker shuts off.-Coffee stays warm for much longer than the description states-The carafe stays cool on the outside. I make a pot and just bring it into the living room with me, or to my desk.-Very aesthetically pleasing design. Looks great in my kitchen.-A full 12 cup coffee-maker. A rare thing amoung thermal carafe coffee-makers-LED Clock/Programmable Timer. Auto Seal. Brew Pause Feature. Automatic Shutoff. Available in different colors-The water level indicator is easy to see-The beep letting you know the coffee is done is loud (I like that)CONS-You do need to pay attention to how to put the lid on, but it isn't exactly rocket science.-The digital clock area is tiny. But read the directions and using the timer is a breeze.-The stainless steel fingerprints easily, but that's not unusual in a stainless steel appliance.-The beep letting you know the coffee is done is loud (Some may not like that)

3Defective, but easily fixed
By G. Thompson
My beloved 25 year-old Rowenta finally died, so I started looking for a new pot with a vacuum carafe and a cone filter. That narrowed the prospects quite a bit, and I bought the Cuisinart because it was easily available and (relatively) inexpensive compared to others with the same features. I read the numerous poor reviews but figured it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to make it work, so I pressed on.Sure enough, the pot was defective in a couple of ways.1. The instruction booklet says to _fill_ the carafe and pour it into the reservoir. The carafe holds twelve cups and the reservoir holds the same before the small hole in back below the hinge dumps any excess on your counter, so in theory it's impossible to over fill. So far, so good - but the guy at Cuisinart who designed this pot apparently skipped his junior high science class the day they described how water expands when it is heated.Twelve cups of cold tap water expands to about twelve and a half cups when it is raised to boiling. So, if you fill the reservoir according to instructions and heat the water, the carafe will overflow onto your counter every single time. Only fill it to the top of the stainless part.2. There's another reason that it randomly barfs hot coffee all over your counter that is not related to the problem related above. I spent a few hours testing my pot with just water (no coffee) to figure out what was going on. It worked perfectly twice, and put hot water on the counter about a dozen times, starting anywhere from when the carafe was half full to almost full. Suddenly the water would stop running into the carafe as though it was plugged up and start spilling over the side. I took the (patent pending!) lid completely apart to see if something might be getting jammed. It's pretty clever - there are two plastic and one metal ball to act as valves to let the coffee in and out while blocking steam and heat from escaping. Everything's a pretty loose fit and not likely to jam - but I finally found the problem (with mine, at least). When you fill a container with water, you must let the air out as you do it, so there is also a small vent passage without any ball valves that goes from the inside of the lid to the threaded area on the side of the lid that's near the carafe handle when the lid is properly tightened. The vent is quite small and exits the lid in a strange way to create a sort of labyrinth to reduce the amount of heat loss. I blew it out with some compressed air and saw something that was plugging it fly out, likely some plastic that fallen in during manufacturing. The vent also seemed somewhat obstructed where it ended, so I cleaned it up a bit with an Xacto knife. The coffee maker now works perfectly - apparently the vent was not always letting air escape quickly enough to let the coffee flow in.I'm also going to put a few small self-adhesive cork glides from the hardware store under the carafe to boost it up a little and make sure the valve in the bottom of the filter stays open properly, as it seems a little dicey. All in all, I like the pot, but for $80, I shouldn't have to do Cuisinart's quality control for them. The problems that so many people are complaining about were easy to recreate and repair - it's really inexcusable that Cuisinart hasn't taken care of them by now.

1What kind of fool am I
By Fred Auerbach
Folks, Let me tell you.... I read all the reviews on this coffee maker before my wife and I decided that; Oh, come on! They must be goofy. How hard can it be to set this coffee pot up correctly to work without spillage; we bought it anyway. It worked for a week or so and then dumped the coffee all over the counter and on the kitchen floor."I must have done something wrong", said the lady of the house. Ok, I'll try it, said the man of the house. It worked... See, all you have to do is.. place the carafe in correctly. Well, I did it for three days and again all over the floor.I called the company and a sweetie pie with the "Have a nice day" mentality helped me to calm down and told me that perhaps the cover was defective. They will send me another if I would return mine.Wife said no.... order a whole carafe so we will have two when we get company. So 50 dollars later, I have two carafes.Wonderful! Now either one will dump the coffee onto the counter after a week or ten days of lulling me into a state of confidence by working fine for 10 days.We have a great deal of patience, and we also feel that we are smart enough to find the problem. So we stuck with it trying different filter baskets, and soaking the lids before using...It was many months now, and it decided to dump this morning; all over the counter; all over the floor; grinds and coffee. The carafe was half filled indicating that it did start out ok and I didn't misalign anything; but with a mind of its own, it decided that it hated us again today. So folks, we got two green garbage bags, one inside the other, and dumped that 99.00 + 50.00 more coffee pot in the trash. It isn't worth the aggravation.I tried to find a website for their corporate office, but they haven't the guts to show any, so this is the only place I could tell you our story.I kid you not. We should have believed all the negatives in this product review section.I would have loved to return it to Amazon, but after so much elapsed time, it would not have been fair.Thank you for listening.Fred Auerbachemail: fred.auerbach@gmail.com

4Good News & "Challenges"
By Donald J. Gross
Six months ago, my wife and I were at Macy's at the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California looking to replace our 20 year old Braun coffee maker. Knowing of the Krups reputation and seeing a cool, blue, round, "digitized" analog clock on the demo unit, impulse buying got the better of us. Programming and using the KM-1000 was an intuitively obvious dream. The first pot - and six months of pots - of various Trader Joe's coffees have been wonderful...after we figured out that to return the carafe to the unit, you have to tilt the carafe backwards slightly to reduce the contact angle of the carafe lid and the filter basket.But...after about 3 months, what looked like a calcium deposit began to form on the surface of the heating plate. No biggie. However, when it got bigger and bigger, closer examination revealed that the dark brown coating was coming off exposing the base metal underneath. The tech folks at Krups had never had any calls about it nor had the folks at California Electric which is one of the Krups factory authorized service centers. Fortunately, Macy's has a 180-day return policy so this afternoon it was returned.Bottom line: Because the KM-1000 makes superb coffee, is a joy to use, and looks good just sitting on the counter top (the water reservoir looks like a translucent, semi-circular fish tank), I only hope that the coating problem was an isolated incident. Although you never see the coating failure unless you remove the carafe, if you're a perfectionist like me...UPDATE: The replacement unit is vastly superior! Krups has totally redesigned the carafe. The pouring spout is much larger and now wedge-shaped making the dripping problem when pouring (I didn't mention that earlier) a thing of the past. Also, either the carafe lid and/or the filter holder has been redesigned such that I no longer have to tilt the carafe to return it to the heading pad. A call to Krups confirmed the redesign. With all new products, employees also test the unit and their comments are noted. However, it's only when customers call in with the same complaints/observations, that manufacturing changes are made. It looks like Krups actually listens to its customers. I would now give the unit a 5-Star rating.

5Great little coffeemaker
By MLE956
Some have commented in their reviews that the coffeepot drips, that the pot itself is difficult to remove and replace into its alcove, or that the coffeemaker spontaneously turns on. I value the consumer reviews posted here and usually heed them, but I loved the look of this coffeemaker so much and could find no other brands to match the styling and features of the KM1000 that I decided to risk it and order. So far, I have experienced none of these problems, and have been very happy with my purchase. The Krups KM1000 is a great little coffeemaker that not only makes a great-tasting, piping hot cup of coffee but looks good while doing it. Programming is easy and the price is right. My only fault with Krups is that not even a sample pack of cone filters was included with the coffeemaker as a courtesy, so be prepared with size 4 cone filters if you want to start brewing out of the box.

1It broke after five months
By ictiologa
This coffee maker was love at first sight. My husband and I used it once a day every day, and it made very good coffee. The coffee maker had to be unplugged every other day and it was very easy to set up the clock. The blue light was a little bit too much (it used to illuminate the whole kitchen at night) and although it didn't bother us it stop working after three months, which we didn't mind. We don't know if the clock stop working by the third month as well, but after five months of use the electrical system completely failed, this coffee maker stop working. I consider this unacceptable for such a simple appliance.

Capresso 303.09 Refurbished 4-Cup Espresso and Cappuccino Machine w/ Cleancaf Coffee Machine Cleaner and Descaler

Product Description

Experience the full taste of espressos, cappuccinos and lattes! The Capresso 4-Cup Espresso & Cappuccino Machine features an exclusive Coffee/Steam selector that makes it easy to control both brewing and steaming, allowing the user to adjust coffee strength to their personal taste. The steam boiler principle of the Capresso 4 Cup Espresso & Cappuccino Machine heats up water and then starts forcing the hot water through the filter holder and brewing espresso coffee into the glass carafe. During this time steam starts collecting in the boiler. When the coffee has reached the bottom line marking on the glass carafe, you can stop the brewing and switch to frothing milk. At that time the machine has created maximum amount of steam. When you finish frothing, turn the selector switch back to the coffee brewing position. Important: To avoid a burnt coffee taste, stop the brewing before all the hot water has passed through the filter holder.

1For use in "ALL" #4 cone coffee makers?
By Bryan
Descriptions claims its for use in ALL, not MOST #4 Cone filtered coffee makers. Not so. Doesn't fit my Gevalia coffee maker -- I can't even close the lid. Not worth paying to return it, so I guess I'll cut the top ring and handle off and make it fit or throw it out.

5Great product
By jrg111
I've been using this filter for about two weeks now. It is my first permanent filter, and I am very happy with its performance. It is solidly built, and with proper care should last quite a while. I debated on the high-end swiss gold filter, but thought the price was too high, so I figured I'd take a chance with this one with free shipping. I can't imagine how much better/different the swiss gold would be if any? I am using a fairly fine ground from a good, flat burr grinder, and have had no issues of grounds/sludge in my coffee. I also purchased a new Zojirushi coffee maker at the same time, so read my review on that as well if you're in the market for a good machine. This filter fits the Zoji perfectly.

2Not a good substitute for the Braun UGSF4
By wilbur
I bought the Medelco #4 cone permanent coffee filter as a substitute for a Braun UGSF4 filter. Unfortunately, it's not a really good substitute. Although the Medelco coffee filter will fit in a Braun coffee maker, it's not as tall and tapered as the Braun UGSF4. As a result, it doesn't concentrate the coffee as much when it is moving through the filter so you have to substantially increase the amount of ground coffee that you are using for the same strength of coffee. So while the Medelco is initially cheaper than the corresponding Braun filter, one would end up spending much more money in the long run because you would use more ground coffee. My advice is to search the net (including e-bay) to find a genuine Braun gold filter...even though it will likely be more expensive than the Medelco filter, you'll be much happier in the long run.

5Has worked like a charm for years
By Kendra
Well, I've had this cappuccino maker for at least six years. And, for six years it has brewed an awful lot of rich espresso and steamed an awful lot of frothy milk. It's worked perfectly for all that time even with heavy use.The little machine is made of heavy duty plastic with metal parts. It's so easy to use. . . grind your coffee very fine (or buy espresso grind), fill up the little metal filter and attach the filter holder to the machine. Then, pour the water in. In just a few seconds, you'll hear the machine heating up and your coffee begins to brew. Right at the end of the brewing cycle, steam your milk by turning the dial. Skim works best, believe it or not-- you get creamy frothy steamed milk every single time with skim (and it really doesn't taste like skim). I put my milk in a cold stainless steel container and this seems to work best. This is marketed as a 4 cup espresso maker, but if you are making cappuccino, plan on getting only two cups with each brewing cycle.Again, for the price of this machine, I couldn't be happier. Every time I am in Starbucks or another store that sells espresso makers, I think how gorgeous those other machines are and consider purchasing one. But, the truth is, those other machines are very expensive and I don't really need one, since I consistently get an excellent cup of cappuccino or espresso from this little $40 machine in less than 5 minutes. It's been six years since I bought this; it's reliable, easy to clean, and brews extremely good coffee.

5One of the Best Buys Ever
By Mer
I've had this cappuccino espresso maker for about 6 months and I am absolutely in love with it. It is easy to use and makes authentic style and tasting cappuccino's just like I had in Rome last year. (Granted, you can't use... say... Folger's and expect to get a good taste. Make sure you use good quality coffee). You can make as little as 1 shot or as much as a 4 cup. Steam your milk in the same machine, it's quick, easy and delcious. I've not had any problems at all with my machine and I use it an average of three times a week.Merittcoffeetalking.com

2Unsatisfactory performance and broken in less than a month!
By Chris Flanigan
I ordered this product on July 30th and received it on August 7th or so. I put it to use that evening and its performance was 'okay'.It simply just does not brew an acceptable espresso - I've tried a few different coffees that I've used in the past with no problem. On a high note, the frother works like a charm!Well, it did anyway... two evenings ago I went to make a chai latte. Everything was going fine until I went to froth the milk and turned the knob to allow steam out of the system. When I turned the knob it exploded! All of the steam built up released out of the side through the hole where the knob was at and the knob and the hardware it's connected to is hanging loose inside of the machine.I'm making a warranty claim on the item this evening. I'm not even sure I'll use it when I get it back...

5GREAT COFFEE! GREAT PRICE!!!
By Tony NYC
Too bad I bought the Mr. Coffee four cup machine before this one. That one tasted like plastic no matter what I did. This gizmo is cheap, brews at 180 degrees, (I tested it) and that's the temperature recommended by the coffee experts. Anything hotter than that cooks the coffee and it has a burnt taste. I drink my java black with no sweetener, so I'm fussy about that burnt taste. This makes a great cup of coffee. No burnt taste, no plastic taste, is convenient to use and easy to clean. VERY good at this price point.

3Get the Elite instead
By Tony
This is basically the same brewer as the Elite Quisine 4 cup brewer which you can buy here at Amazon. The same manufacturer must make both for different companies. One says "Elite" and the other says "Continental" but they are clones. Both are so inexpensive I got one of each, in case I need a spare. As inexpensive as they are, I don't know how long they will last. This one seems to have a slightly lower brewing temperature than the Elite Quisine and the caraf doesn't have calibrations for the amount of coffee that the Elite has. This one is also a lot cheaper. I paid only $12.00 and now it is down to $9 and change. The Elite is 19.95.My only real criticism of this one is that the brewing temperature could be hotter, as the other brewer is. I measured the temperature in the pot on this at 179 degrees Farenheit but that is after the water soaks through the beans and drips through the air about 6 inches. The Elite temps out at 185 in the pot. It tastes hotter too.If you buy this one, or the other for that matter, I would recommend one of those double walled Bodum mugs you can get at Starbucks (don't have those shipped or they will arrive broken half of the time.) This will keep your coffee warmer longer but I wouldn't take to long to drink it lest it not be hot enough for you.Good luck in any case.

5Perfect size, delicious coffee, inexpensive
By P. Meyer
I had the identical unit for several years, when the crafe broke I did a little searching and found this one which I immediately ordered.I love this little coffee maker. It's compact and user friendly - the smoked water tank is easy to see through, the lid lifts open easily and there's room to pour the water unobstructed, the coffee receptacle swings out of the way and each of these operations can be done with one hand. It has a valve to allow serving while brewing but the mechanism is a little delicate which makes swinging the coffee receptacle open one handed a little fiddly but nothing like say the Mr Coffee. My old one was a cast-off and that valve mechanism was broken when I got it but I loved the compact size and excellent coffee it made so while I kept shopping for replacements I never found one I liked better. I live on a sailboat so space is a premium and this little unit fits in perfectly. The power switch and water tank graduations are on the right side, the water tank lid is accessible from either side but the coffee receptacle swings open to the left. If it swung to the right the unit could be placed sideways - this and the fiddly valve lever are the only negatives and overall they're extremely trivial.Uses about 600 watts when brewing and less than half that when warming. It comes with a plastic grounds basket which lifts out one-handed but for cleanup on a boat I prefer to use Melitta #2 paper filters.
