5Makes really good coffee if ...
By Kenneth Cooper
On getting ready to order another Cafe Uno I decided to read some other opinions. Hmm. Here's a recommendation for everyone who orders any one of these one cup coffee makers: Use a paper filter. With this unit I simply cut a paper napkin into 16 little squares and place one in the basket on each making. On the other two one cup makers I purchased I used regular coffee filters (small ones). The other two units I bought were made by Brookstone and Black & Decker. I've owned the Brookstone for several years. It's been excellent. It's just getting old and the coffee doesn't taste as good as it used to. The Black & Decker lasted for a month before it burned out (sometimes with these I forget to add water, realize my mistake, then put the water in without letting it cool down). You shouldn't shock the heater that way, but on the other hand, both the Brookstone and the Uno One have been very forgiving. The one thing the Uno One doesn't have that the others had is an automatic shut-off. On the other hand, forgetting to turn off the lighted switch doesn't seem to hurt anything. By the way, the porcelain cup that comes with this little guy is only about 7 oz. One other point, I've found that very slightly less than a level scoop of Yuban coffee grounds makes the best cup. Why am I buying another? Because this one makes better coffee than any coffee maker I've ever owned .. so I want another for a spare .. just in case.

2Seems great at first, but is a piece of junk
By Cga
This is one of those items that seems great at first but quickly shows its true colors. I bought mine from an online auction site (you know the one I'm talking about).I'd searched for a good one cup coffee maker (don't want the pod type) with the smallest possible footprint for quite a while before buying this one. After trying three or four machines I'm still looking.Even though, strangely enough, it makes quite a good cup of coffee, I can't believe there are any positive reviews of this product at all.I never tried brewing a cup of coffee using the permanent filter. What's the point? It's too much trouble cleaning that style filter. Why anyone would use such a filter is a mystery to me. What I did was cut down larger sized paper filters.A list of the issues and problems I noticed within a week:--The hinge holding the flip top will not stay attached. As a result I have to just press the top in place and hope for the best.--There is a tiny reducer type part that is there to apparently control the dripping of the coffee into the cup. This fell off and disappeared immediately. However, it does not affect operation.--The two interchangeable mug platforms are completely superfluous. They're totally unnecessary. The cup, ANY cup that will fit under the dripping part, will stay in place just fine without either platform.--It takes a LONG time for it to produce a cup of coffee.--It's too hard to clean. Coffee splatters underneath, and because the machine is white you can't just ever put it away without thoroughly washing it first.--It's made from very very cheap, lightweight plastic. It's far too insubstantial, even for an inexpensive coffee maker. Actually, it's not all that cheap...There are two good things about this coffee maker. It really does make a good cup of coffee, and it does take up very little space on your countertop.

4Just what my parents wanted
By Stuart T. Pyburn
I bought this for my 90 year old parents as a replacement for the same item that was 20 years old and stopped heating. I don't belive i would use this item but for them it's perfect. No cups to buy just there normal coffee and tea and they are set. It's simple and works well.

5Dimensions for 3-cup Gaskets
By William Pollock
I guessed that the 3-cup version was what I needed for our 4-cup stainless steel Bialetti pot, and luckily I was right. The gasket's outer diameter is 2.5 inches, and the ring is 0.25 inches wide.It is the real deal, Bialetti product - a package of 3 gaskets plus a replacement filter. A great deal at this price. This came from J&R, and arrived in only a couple days with standard shipping. I'm totally, completely satisfied!

4Sizing!!
By Aaron
I'd give 5 stars since the current gasket has lasted forever but since Bialetti and amazon both are reluctant to provide sizing, I'm knocking it a star. I replaced mine since I now have to crank the pieces together firm enough I sometimes can't get it loose to prevent leaks. As far as sizing, if a person were to go to espressoparts, they would find that the:---3 cup gasket has measurements of: Outside Diameter: 64.75mm (2.54 in.); Inside Diameter: 50mm (1.96 in.); Thickness: 2.6mm (.102 in.) - that's the vertical thickness and not the width of the gasket---6 cup gasket: Outside Diameter: 72mm (2.83 in.), Inside Diameter: 55.5mm (2.18 in.), Thickness: 2.75mm (.108 in.)---9 cup gasket: Outside Diameter: 80mm (3.149 in.), Inside Diameter: 63mm (2.48 in.), Thickness: 3.52mm (.12 in.)So, if you're under the 3, it's probably a 1, if you're between the 3 and 6, I guess you maybe have a 4 cup. The measurements for coffee are all silly anyway as they use a 4-6oz as a cup in order to appear to increase the volume of their maker.-Also, my 3 cup maker takes almost exactly 1/2 cup (118ml) of water to reach bottom of the safety valve. So, in Bialetti math, we can assume that they think around 40ml is an espresso cup. Hopefully that helps.

4You MUST read this before to buy Bialetti's parts!
By Alex
I bought 3 new gaskets to replace the one in my Bialetti's 1 cup coffee maker. As many here, I ended up buying the wrong ones :-(No biggy, since I own different Bialettis in different sizes, but definitely a nuisance. In order to avoid my mistake, I suggest you to go to the online Bialetti's store (Bialetti.com).In the 'replacement parts' section, you'll find a very useful tool to determine which gaskets you need, based on some measurements. Also it seems the prices are a little lower, but I'll leave this judgment to you...

5Great coffee... no gimmick. Alien UFO technology? Possibly.
By D. Thiel
With all the new style espresso machines on the market (Tassimo, Keurig, Flavia, etc.) I was convinced that Nespresso was more of the same: a set of stylish gimmicks designed to convince you that this "espresso" (though not real at all) was "the real thing." It never is.Which is why the Nespresso is so great. It IS the REAL THING. The capsules contain nothing more than espresso coffee grounds. The machine is simply an automated and miniaturized "real" espresso rig. And the results speak for themselves:-- full bodied crema like you get from the best barista-- speedy and HOT cups of espresso-- the espresso produced is crisp and clear, full bodied, and smooth-- my Sicilian wife and all her relatives (numerous, and mostly named "Maria" "Antonina" and "Dominic") all fully approve of the espresso that comes out. Comparing is to "Nonna's" would be sacrilege, but although those words have not been spoken yet, I am conviced the thought has crossed a couple minds. :-)-- all this in under 30 seconds and within a square foot of counter space. The frothing unit that comes with the machine is nothing short of black magic. I have NO IDEA what it does or how it does it, but the results will amaze you. And the best part is it's easy to clean: no sticky milk mess left behind to make you wonder who's gonna get sick first.Coffee for this machine is 55 cents per cup, and Nespresso delivers online orders with astonishing speed (which is good, because you can't get the coffee from anyone else!). A bit pricey, but in this case you DO get what you pay for... and then some.

4Love our Nespresso Citiz
By Kate Jacobs
I purchased the Nespresso Citiz several months ago and saved it for Christmas. It was a gift for both my husband and myself. Our morning routine has been to brew a pot of coffee, heat milk in the microwave, and froth by hand in a stainless steel frother. Needless to say, there are lots of steps and lots of items for the dishwasher, but we love our morning coffee. The Nespresso was a hit right out of the box. It is so simple to use, the milk froths better than anything we've ever done by hand, the expresso is divine. My husband said it best, "It is so good that it makes you think about what you are drinking and appreciate the experience of really good coffee." Like someone wrote in a previous review, "we're not going to Starbucks anymore." Yes it is expensive, but over time can actually save money. Yes, you have to order the pods from Nespresso, but this is high quality expresso and delivery is fast. I purchased the sample box to give us an opportunity to try everything. This is an exceptional product.UPDATE: 3/11/10 The frother on our unit has quit working on two occasions . . .the first quit working after a month, the second after six weeks. While there was no problem getting replacement units, I am concerned that after the unit is out of warranty we will have a Citiz unit with a broken frother. I see someone else has had the same problem in these reviews. It is important not to leave the frother on the connector after use, and let it cool completely between uses. ( Even following these instructions, ours still malfunctioned.) The Citiz is wonderful. We love the coffee, getting pods is a breeze. Customer service is wonderful, but I am seriously considering taking our unit back to the store where we bought it and getting a separate unit and frother.UPDATE: 5/2/10. The frothier quit again. We use it several times a day....4 to 5 times...it quit yesterday and we are frustrated. We treat it with kid gloves since we've been through four frothers since Christmas. Nespresso service has been great but we are going to return the unit to the store and exchange for the unit without the frothier and buy a separate frothier. Upside..we can take it with us. I would be interested in knowing if others have had similar problems. Before buying the combined unit consider your usage. It may be fine if you only use it once a day. However, if you will be making multiple cups of latte each day, you may wish to consider buying separately.UPDATE 11/9/2010 We did return the original unit in September and picked up a separate frother and the Citiz without the frother. We've been very happy since. In fact we took in on vacation with us. Stayed in several different hotels and it didn't bother us to haul it around as we really love the Nespresso coffee.

5Genius, I tell ya!
By Hoke Simpson
This machine is brilliant. The best espresso or cappuccino I've ever tasted, and all in less than 2 minutes, start to finish. The milk frother is a miracle--quick, perfect, instant cleanup. My wife and I have been wired out of our heads since it arrived. We can't stop drinking the stuff. We're giving Stieg Larsson's characters a run for their caffeinated money! The reason is that all the usual inhibitors are gone: the coffee's gone cold and acrid in the pot, can't face the 20-minute production and cleanup for a cup of espresso, etc. It's like the world's smartest drug dealers got together and designed this thing. Got the slightest urge? Satisfy it! Why not? Just hit the button and it's there. Wait a minute, my wife's calling me. What's that? We're out? Excuse me, I have to go knock over a 7/11 so I can order another box of capsules.

5This is not a bad machine
By M. Sun
Do not understand why this item has so many bad reviews. It is not a bad machine! My last expresso machine was also a Krups steam powered. Lasted for 13 years until it fell apart last week (the prssure valve inside broke). For my replacement machine, I was looking at fully automatic ones (Magnifica, $900), pump based (like cuisineart em-200, $200), and steam powered (like this item, $50). After reading all the review and knowing how pump based machine works, I decided not to go for them. The main reasons are they require a lot of maintenance and they can break down easily. I just do not want high pressure stuff in my house. If it breaks down, it may take a month or two to fix it. After warranty is over, it is more expensive to fix than buying a new one. I basically want a reliable espresso machine which can last 10 years with very little mainenance.I typically makes a few shots in the morning as soon as I get up. I just do not see how pump based or full automatic machine can save me time. They require preheat which can take 1-5 minutes. For steam based ones, I just load up the coffee and water and wait. Both would give me pretty good espresso after 5-7 minutes. As far as flavor goes, I do not really feel any difference between my cheap machine and starbucks/peet's coffee, given using the same coffee. I think good espresso got more to do with type of coffee then the machine. Started drinking espresso drinks heavily in college in 80s, I think I am pretty picky on coffee.I saw a local store carries this item at $49. I decided to give it a try since they have pretty liberal return policy. It turns out to be a pretty good machine, better than my old Krups and with high pressure. The good:(1) Pretty good looking among entry machines, although the price is $10 more than ugly ones.(2) Makes good espresso drinks quicklyThe not so good:(1) The knob takes time to get used to. The knob has three seetings: off, steam and espresso. It is pretty easy for people to turn on steam when they want espresso, a potentially dangerous situation. Krups should have separate power button instead.(2) The power cord is kind of short, 6 inch shorter than my old one.(3) It is pretty hard to heat up the milk straight from the frig. You more likely to have a bunch of cold foams. The better way is to heat up the mil in microwave and then use the steam to make foam.Overall, I recommend it as an entry machine.

5Works great; may need periodic scale removal
By now what
I've had one of these machines for several years and I just ordered another one for our vacation home. The beverage it produces is just as good as any. I use decent beans (Starbucks or comparable) and normal espressso grind. I rarely drink latte or cap, since I prefer full coffee flavor, but on the occasions I have, this machine has done a fine job. I agree with another reviewer that the plastic tube on the steam outlet isn't really necessary.____________________UPDATE:I've had a chance to use the new machine a few times. Observations:--At least one user reported odd chemical or plastic odor when using. I have not observed this.--Someone expressed dissatisfaction with the need to steam the milk before making the coffee. This is NOT necessary. The instructions do recommend steaming the milk first, but this is only to avoid the frustration of using almost all the water/steam pressure when making the coffee, only to find that there isn't enough left to steam the milk adequately. The milk steaming process uses only a fraction of the amount of water used to make an espresso, so under normal circumstances there should be enough left if you do the coffee first. Because of back pressure caused by compression of the coffee during the espresso process, after the coffee stops dripping out there is still quite a bit of steam left in the machine.--Someone complained that there is no tamper. This isn't a commercial machine, and it can't handle enough pressure to make espresso with a fine grind if it's packed very tightly. The instructions recommend NOT packing the coffee tightly. So the lack of a tamper is not a problem. You can use a small spoon to pack the coffee GENTLY.--The container for the coffee is a very tight fit when you thread it into the machine, and it takes a lot of pressure/force to get the handle turned all the way to the front to the locked position. My previous machine was like this, too; it loosens up to normal very quickly with use. (If you were a fan of "Are You Being Served, this may remind you of the oft-repeated line, "Don't worry, they'll ride up with wear.")--TIP: You can save some cleaning time by folding up a paper towel (in fourths)and putting it under the metal grate that goes beneath the coffee cup and catches drips. Every day or so, take out the paper towel and put in a new one. The paper will absorb drips and spills and changing it is easier than sopping up coffee that has dripped and pooled in the recessed area beneath the metal grate________________________________________To those who complain about the lack of a steaming container: use the carafe. They don't advertise a special steaming container, so why expect one?TIP: even if you use filtered water, the water will have dissolved minerals which create scale inside the machine. This may be the cause of slow brewing, excessive steam escaping, etc. Scale can cause this. To remove scale: pour a 50% solution (1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar) of distilled white vinegar into the machine. Screw the cap back on. Put the clean, empty metal coffee filter on, and put the carafe under the spout in the usual way. Turn on the machine. In effect, you're making a carafe of espresso without the coffee. Let the machine run until no more hot solution comes out. You will smell a strong vinegar smell. Pour out the carafe, rinse, and refill the machine with clean water. Run the water through the machine, just as you did with the vingar solution. This will clean any residual vinegar out. The whole process takes 5 min or less, and you will be amazed at how much quicker you can make your espresso.-------------UPDATE #2I have used the unit for over a month--about 4 times per day (OK, I'm hooked). Still working great, very quick, good results.

5Best money I've spent on coffee.....
By KateFM
Granted, I worked at a starbucks for a little while after high school so I kind of knew the work that it could take to steam a pitcher of milk and pull a shot of espresso. For the price, I think this is a great starter if you're strapped for cash or want to dabble with espresso & latte preparation. I've had mine for 2 years now. It's the first one I ever bought. I've had to replace the coffee grind holder/handle once (for about $13), but other than that, i've had no problems. read the directions, they are great. they inform you that pressure builds within the machine and if you do not properly release the pressure upon completion, then yes, it will explode the grinds all over you. duh.it's pretty easy to clean and maintain. I bought a brush to clean the steaming wand.It does not come with a frothing pitcher or a beverage thermometer (which i recommend) but they are both pretty inxpensive. I ordered one of each when i ordered my machine.regarding timing, i put the water in my machine and it begins steaming within 1 minute-1 1/2 minute TOPS. Then when i'm done steaming my milk, i switch it right to the coffee setting and it dispenses my coffee instantly. thats good enough for me!Hope this review is helpful. i've recommended this to many friends and I think its fantastic for the money.

Capresso 30399 Refurbished 4-Cup Espresso Cappuccino Machine w/ Bronze Mug Tree Bronze Finish w/ Dezcal Home Activated Coffee/ Espresso Descaler & 4 Pieces 10 oz. ARC Handy Glass Coffe Mug

Product Description

Experience the full taste of espressos, cappuccinos and lattes! The Capresso 4-Cup Espresso & Cappuccino Machine features an exclusive Coffee/Steam selector that makes it easy to control both brewing and steaming, allowing the user to adjust coffee strength to their personal taste. The steam boiler principle of the Capresso 4 Cup Espresso & Cappuccino Machine heats up water and then starts forcing the hot water through the filter holder and brewing espresso coffee into the glass carafe. During this time steam starts collecting in the boiler. When the coffee has reached the bottom line marking on the glass carafe, you can stop the brewing and switch to frothing milk. At that time the machine has created maximum amount of steam. When you finish frothing, turn the selector switch back to the coffee brewing position. Important: To avoid a burnt coffee taste, stop the brewing before all the hot water has passed through the filter holder.

5Excellent Machine and Value
By Viewfinder
After purchasing and returning a cheap Mr. Coffee steam espresso machine that produced nothing close to a real espresso, I decided to get serious about finding a solid "entry-level" espresso machine. I did an exhaustive (ie: ridiculous) amount of research, reading reviews at a myriad of sites, comparing prices, talking to friends who consider themselves "espresso experts", etc. What I found first is that you will never find 100% agreement on a given machine. Second, you have to establish your price range. It does seem that with espresso machines, the more you're willing to pay, the more you get, either in features, design, longevity or performance. For me, despite my friend raving about his newest $700 "it does everything except read the paper to you" machine, as a first time home machine buyer, I wanted to limit my first expenditure. So I set a max budget at $250 and learned about every possible option.I won't go through the reasons I didn't buy other machines and it is possible that many I chose not to buy would have been perfectly good. What I will tell you is that thus far, about 3 months and 100+ espressos later, I am extremely happy with my DeLonghi EC702. The bottom line is that it produces a perfect crema with a rich taste. The steaming wand, though not perfectly designed, works well and I can make excellent Lattes. I feel it is important to add that like any machine, it takes some practice to produce the perfect espresso. There are so many human variables that come into play - how long to let the pump run, proper warm-up time, type of coffee, the grind, how much you compact/tamp the coffee, etc. - that no two people will get the same results. However, the performance of this machine has been flawless. I have not experienced any leaks or problems. I have followed the instructions carefully from the first use, kept it properly cleaned and it has rewarded me with a great cup every day. Some other positives:- Very good clearance between the bottom of the filter holder and the base. I have a nice size cappuccino mug (in addition to standard espresso cups) and it fits perfectly. Apparently this is a problem with some other machines.- Two size filters - one for single shot and one for double shot espressos.- Filters also use the ESE pod system if you're into that. I don't use pods.- Large, easily removable and cleanable water holder.- It looks great. All silver, mostly metal. Doesn't have any of that cheap looking black plastic.- Warming tray on top really works. I store my cups and filters on top and they are nice and warm after about 15 minutes, which is the recommended warm-up time. And BTW - this is not a problem. I get up, walk in the kitchen, turn it on. By the time I come back into the kitchen after getting the kids going, it is ready. Those people who complain because they have to wait a few minutes need to re-evaluate their addiction to coffee.- Great price point. Under $200.Some notes:- Yes, it is somewhat noisy for the 15 seconds it produces the coffee - but it is a pump machine, which you must have. My kids running around in the morning make far more noise than the machine.- Your first 5-6 cups will taste like battery acid. I was warned of this from an experienced friend. All new machines must be broken in to eliminate that metallic taste. So when you get it, after following the directions and running water through it a few times, then make several throw-away cups of coffee as well. I used a less expensive coffee for this instead of wasting my good stuff. Allowing the coffee flavor to permeate the filters will properly prep the machine.- You must clean it at proper intervals. The machine even comes with a bottle of descaler.- Buy an external tamper. It will make it much easier on you, help you be consistent in your tamping and will keep the machine cleaner. I bought the $8 Terry's Tamper on Amazon and it is the perfect size for the DeLonghi filter. Don't waste your money on expensive tampers.- Make sure you use the proper very fine grinds meant for espresso machines. I took one bag of beans to a grinder at Trader Joe's and set it to the finest grind, which I thought was great. However, I later bought a can of Illy pre-ground for espresso (a fabulous coffee by-the-way) and learned that my public grinding was nowhere near as fine. So my espressos improved even further using a better grind. So there it is. I actually purchased mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond as a 20% off coupon brought the price down to equal the generally better Amazon prices, but also allowed me an easy, walk-in no questions asked return policy if I wasn't happy.I hope this helps people. I felt I owed a review as thanks to all those whose reviews I leaned on. My final thought is that once you get hooked on making your own espressos, even with a good machine like the DeLonghi, you do start to see the value in the really expensive machines that are fully automatic and even grind the beans like my friends $700 gizmo. But for the regular guy who doesn't mind a little manual labor and doesn't have $700 to drop, I highly recommend this machine.

5Best espresso maker out of my last 4!!!!
By T. Pajak
I have been making espresso at home for 30 years and have gone through 3 machines prior to purchasing the DeLonghi. The first was purchased in Rome in 1978 when home-brewed espresso in the US was a rarity. That machine lasted 10 years before the pump blew out and looking back it just made 'acceptable' coffee. I next purchased a Krups (from Amazon) and ran that one to death in 10 more years. It was a fine machine but not surprisingly, it did wear out. A good value for the price and I got a lot of service from it. Then I got a Braun which was totally serviceable for yet another 10 years....do these things all last 10 years? I guess so. When it was time to purchase another espresso maker, I chose the DeLonghi EC702. What a nice surprise! It heats up really quickly, and despite the owner's manual that says let it warm up for 15 minutes before you brew the first cup, I find you can get a perfect cup after only about 3 minutes of warm-up. Then, hit the 'milk steamer' button and in just one more minute it's hot enough to do the milk for a great cappuccino. The steamer nozzle is the first I've seen that can be EASILY dismantled (two small pieces to pull off) and rinsed. Former models had to be scrubbed with a scouring pad occasionally to scape off the residue left on the nozzle. This DeLonghi setup is far better and the steamer nozzle is always clean and ready for your next cappuccino. The drip tray (plastic with a metal grid) pulls off for easy cleaning too. Being a coffee-hound, I use the double-filter basket to make a single cup, although the photo shows two demitasse cups being filled side-by-side. Really, I'd recommend this machine without reservation. It's good-looking, easily cleanable, warms up super fast, quickly steams the milk to a lovely froth, and filling the water reservoir is a snap because it pulls out like a small drawer so you can squirt more water in from the sink's dish sprayer without needing to remove the entire reservoir from the machine (at least that's how I do it). A full reservoir makes about 4 good-sized cappuccinos with frothed milk before needing refilling. All in all, a GREAT machine at a GREAT price. Buy it!

5Great machine, great price, great crema, great steam - read instructions!
By Flat You Lent
Basically all of the negative reviews they did not read the instructions well enough. This thing kicks ass for a 15 bar espresso/cappuccino machine for under (...). Perfect crema, nice steam, cleans easily. Sexy stainless. Of course it doesn't have auto on-off... IT IS AN ESPRESSO MACHINE! The timing is different every time as the water pumps through, and how will it know if you are making a short, a double or if you want to turn it off early? If you are too lazy to push a single button to start and stop the pump, get a "Mr. Coffee" and quit whining that your appliance doesn't tie your shoes for you... The steam nozzle only leaks if you don't close it. If you don't put the lever back to the closed position all the way, yes, then water sprays out. When it is not in steam mode and the valve is open it sprays water, thats what it is supposed to do (for tea, etc.). It is not that complicated a machine, but common sense is uncommon to most people. It heats up fast, makes a delicious cup of cappuccino or espresso and cleans up easily. The warming rack on the top is designed well also. It makes me happy to turn this thing on in the morning. It prefers finely ground espresso, not espresso ground for drip machines or stovetops. If you are a "pod" person, you should be ashamed and really don't need this machine. This machine is for brewing a real cup with fresh grounds. If you can work simple machinery and like espresso/cappuccino from freshly ground beans, get this machine and enjoy. If you are a bit lazy and prefer everything to be automatic and are the type to use "pods", do not get this machine.
