Perfect percolator for stovetop, RV or camping stove

Before you order, double check the listing above and click the one you want. They are using the same reviews on several pages at Amazon for 2 different styles of coffeepots from the same manufacturer, one in stainless steel, and the other in aluminum. There are supposed to be sized by 6 cup, 9 cup, 12 cup and 20 cup. The version I own is the 6 cup Chinook Timberline stainless steel pot, but there is also an aluminum version called the Chinook Canyon that is not nearly as strong (prone to denting but light for camping). The Timberline is stainless steel and has the wood trim on the handle, hinged lid, glass dome and stainless steel basket assembly. The Canyon is an aluminum camping pot that has folding wire handles, removable lid, it is aluminum, has the plastic dome, and an aluminum basket assembly. I prefer percolators over drip coffeemakers. My grandma never liked drip coffeemakers, and it took me many years to learn why. For starters I have never had to replace a stove top percolator because it was broken, but have owned countless expensive drip coffeemakers. Coffeemakers have carafes that break, a clock to reset, takes up counter-space, parts you can't get to to clean inside, buttons to fuss with, paper filters to replace. Mineral deposits can build up in the water lines. After a few years, some drip coffeemakers start to taste acidic, but not my percolator. With a percolator you can adjust the perking time to get the exact brew strength you like. I also have an old electric percolator from the 1950's and it works great. My simple percolating pot lasts years longer, and the clean-up and maintenance is simpler. Now you can buy paper filters for percolators too, but I think that is a waste of money. For taste, I get a full bodied dark coffee, and I do not need to buy the high dollar coffee I used to buy to get the same robust flavor. My opinion anyway. I have had it for about 14 years before I ran into it here. It still looks new and still makes a great cup of coffee. This pot is very sturdy, high quality 18/8 stainless steel with a strong handle. The lid has a hinge so that when you pour a cup the lid does not fall out. It has a water mark to help you measure out water. If you take the basket out you can use it to heat water for tea and hot chocolate as well. This model has a real glass dome, and some folks can break them. They sell replacements in 2 sizes at Amazon.com for less than a pack of paper filters. Do not use this on a fire, the handle may get damaged just like a plastic or rubber handle would. And use a potholder, like any pan or pot, it can get hot.TIPS: Wet the inside of the basket before you put grounds in, to help prevent grounds from going through the holes. Use a medium ground blend, if you use a fine blend you may need to use a paper filter inside the basket. Don't cram the coffee grounds down into the basket either. Some folks like to heat the water good and hot, and then put the basket in, I don't as that is a good way to get burned.RECOMMENDATION: Great pot, my favorite for home use. I love percolators and have reviewed over a dozen here, and have a Listmania called "Camp Coffee Pot Percolator Including Campfire Coffeepot".

Very Disappojnted

Ordered the Chinook Timberlake percolator because it was described as stainless steel with a glass top. When I received the percolator there were two clear problems. The top was plastic, not glass, and the lid did not close "seamlessly.". I was surprised at the poor construction. I read in another review that the lid didn't fit correctly, but I chalked that up to an isolated flaw. Anyway,ing story short, I ordered a Rapid Brew stainless steel and found it to be far superior. We are now happy percolator people.

Nice coffee maker

I've had no mechanical problems with this coffee maker and it makes a good pot of coffee. My two concerns are that I had to put about 10 pots of fresh water through to reduce the slight plastic smell before making my first pot of coffee. The mesh filter insert is nice for getting the most flavor out of coffee, but you need to be careful because the small cone filter can get pushed in so that a lot of the hot water runs down next to the filter. A big disappointment when you're waiting for your fist cup! I've solved that problem by wetting the filter with water before I put the coffee in and making sure that the leading edge is pretty well tucked in next to the mesh filter.

Very disappointing

I ordered this item two times each time it came cracked. I waited long enough for this product only to have waited for nothing. There is nothing on the box stating to handle this box with care. It has to have been thrown around unless they send them out already broken.

Never was able to make coffee in this. Both times the poduct was shipped it arrived broken. If this fragile in shipping can't imagine it would last very long with daily use.

With plastic switch to a silicone-edge plunger. Update on durability.

If your press has a metal plunger you'll need to buy their silicone-edged plunger when you change to the plastic beaker, otherwise the sides of the plastic unit will become scratched and cracked in a relatively short timeUpdate: We're on our third plastic beaker in 15 months. The first one cracked because we hadn't switched to a silicone-edge plunger(above). The second unit lasted longer but then cracked as well. After getting the third plastic one I talked with a Bodum and he said that I must be sure to wait 45 seconds after the water has boiled before pouring it into the beaker, and that the water must not touch the sides when pouring. BTW, he agreed to send me a free backup beaker.

Shatterproof Beaker

Do not waste your money on this item! I purchased the beaker so that I would not have to replace glass ones, which I have broken while washing in the sink (once someone "poured" it out of the holder and broke it). By my 3rd glass replacement beaker, I decided to buy the plastic. It cracks laterally, all around the beaker. You can hear it splitting, and this occurs only in a few weeks. Plus they are more expensive. Rip off!! I'm simply going to have to be more careful with my glass beakers.

Has held up for almost 2 years...

I opted for the "shatterproof" model when I bought my first Bodum; not quite understanding at the time that their "polycarbonate" meant "plastic" -- so it wasn't as "elegant" as the French press coffee-makers I had seen around. But given the number of glass drip carafes we've gone through before I went to press coffee, I wasn't too disappointed. It's held up very well, especially considering that I grind my coffe myself and do it way too fine, so it takes extra *oomph* to get the press down! It is time for a replacement now, since my original has developed stress cracks radiating from the center bottom. It's not yet affecting it's function, but I'm afraid it's a matter of time... It's been through the dishwasher, though, countless times; and has probably hit the floor once or twice!

I finally found one of these that I like!

I had a Swiss Gold coffee filter a few years ago, and I used it several times w/ regular grind coffee. I always had grounds/sludge in the bottom of the pot.I gave away the Swiss Gold and went back to paper filters, but I'm trying to economize and "go green," so I thought I would try one of these again and just learn to live with the grounds in the pot, or maybe strain them out with a tea strainer when I poured from the carafe or something.So, I ordered this Frieling Gold Coffee Filter last week, and the holes in it are smaller than on the Swiss Gold. Guess what: NO GROUNDS IN THE POT! NO SLUDGE!If you use a fine grind, I would guess you MIGHT have some grounds get through, but with a regular, commercial grind, no problems. In the morning, I just want my coffee quick, and I either use commercially prepared regular grind coffee or grind my own on medium.I have a Krups coffee / espresso "combo" machine.Submitted by "Mrs. Neighbor John"

Perfect, been using for 3 months

I ordered this to pair with a Bonavita BV1800 8-Cup Coffee Maker with Glass Carafe, Brushed Aluminum after I got tired of messing with paper filters' cost and waste.The filter fits perfectly in the Bonavita (and presumably other #4 filter holders), and seems to be reasonably sturdy. I alternate washing it by hand and dishwashing (top rack), and it looks as good after three months as it did when new.As for the grind, I use freshly ground beans, ground on a medium fine setting with a Jura-Capresso 560 Infinity Conical Burr Grinder, Brushed Silver, 8.5-Ounce grinder.I have not had issues with sludge or coffee that is weak: it has been well brewed every time, perhaps a bit on the strong side. You can easily tell that it's not a paper filter, too: the coffee oils are (slightly) visible in the brewed coffee. If you worry about those, then you should stick with paper.For the price and quality of the coffee so far, I can recommend it. Cheers!

To be fair, this is the first one I've had, so I don't know how this compares to other metal/reusable coffee filters.About 50% of the time, Coffee drains through too fast unless you preform some sort of voodoo ritual and have the grind and water temperature at just the right size-maybe, still not sure what size that should be. Even with a perfect paper filteresque drain, You get a fair amount of sludge in the bottom of the pot.HOWEVER, its worth it to know we'll never have to worry about running out of or buying filters again, and it makes perfectly drinkable coffee. Though I've got into the British habit of leaving the last 1/4" of liquid at the bottom to avoid the sludge.

Don't waste your money on the over-priced Bialetti

Bene Casa's 6-cup "cafetera," as they call these units in Spain, is an excellent substitute for the WAY over-priced Bialetti. Clearly some folks like the "charm" of being able to say that their "cafetera" was manufacture in Italy instead of China (wher Bene Casa's unit is made), but if the quality of the unit is equivalent, is it worth paying $20 extra for the name? I do not. This is all aluminum, just like Bialetti's, and all three disassembling parts join flawlessly. The espresso made is the same as that by Bialetti's and other "cafeteras." So, unless you have money to burn, buy the Bene Casa brand and you'll enjoy a quality unit that produces the same excellent espresso. Now, if I can only find a 12-cup unit by Bene Casa...

One Star is too high

ONE STAR IS TOO HIGH.We purchased the 3 and the 6 cup models for XMAS Gifts.The 6 CUP leaks without ever even heating it. Just along the bottom edge at one of the corners, the casting is too thin!The 3 cup does not leak until you heat the water. It then sprays out steam along the main "seal" between the pots and all AROUND the pressure valve (not through it).I do so wish they had included in the product information that these are junk manufactured by the cheapest company in China. With this poor level of workmanship, who knows how many heavy metals are in it.Don't risk your health, buy a product from somewhere that has health and quality standards.

Stove Top Espresso Coffee Maker - Not Bad...

Got this in hopes to make my daily coffee (versus getting a typical coffeemaker).At first opening, everything seemed ok.Made my initial first pot and didn't know how high or low the gas stove was supposed to be to get the percolating action going.After figuring out the right temperature, it seemed fine enough... every now and then it would seem that I would have some water leftover in the bottom reservoir - not sure if that's normal or not.And as others have reported, recently I had this unit over the gas flame a little off center while washing the dishes and smelled burning plastic. Thank God I was in the kitchen and was able to prevent a fire!The handle melted somewhat but remained intact and I can still use the unit (now that I place the unit more off-centered so the handle is far away from the gas flames as possible). Instead of grabbing it by the handle I just have to use an over mitt and grip the unit from the top. Not ideal but still functional...
