5like i'm back in chemistry lab, and i get to drink the product!
By asphodel
This product does not plug into an outlet, has no buttons and doesn't beep when ready. If you're not willing to pour hot water over coffee grounds, this probably isn't the system for you. But if you're willing to put in a little extra effort for a lot of extra flavor, read on.I had a traditional coffee maker, one that allows the grinds to sit in a cupcake filter inside a plastic container while near boiling water filters through. Hot water --> plastic --> consumption is probably not good. That coffee maker now resides in the break room of an office building.I also have a french press, which makes pretty decent non-plastic coffee, but I don't like the grittiness of my frequent "cowboy" cups. So I reserved the french press for my tea, and started looking at other coffee brewing systems. The Aerobie Aeropress is hailed to make the perfect cup of coffee, but I ran into the heated plastic issue again. So that was out.Chemex just makes sense. It's a simple design that comes in different sizes. You must use the Chemex filters, which are easy to fold into the required conical shape. Directions give a 5oz. water to 1 T. coffee ratio (I like my coffee a bit stronger, though). I have instant hot water (they recommend 200F), and find this temp works perfectly, so I don't have to heat my water in a kettle first. Chemex really highlights the blooming process in making coffee, and this is such an important step for flavor extraction. It really makes a smooth, rich cup of coffee (granted, the quality of coffee depends on the quality of beans you use--and grind immediately before brewing!). I bought the glass lid, and please know that it DOES NOT FIT THIS SMALL MODEL. Cleanup is super easy--just rinse and invert to air dry.

3Great cuppa joe -- but buy the other 3 cup Chemex carafe!
By Far2Go
Summary: 5 stars for the coffee. 2 stars for this carafe and the troublesome wooden collar. Steer clear and buy the other 3 cup Chemex with the glass handle!Detail: The coffee you'll get from a Chemex system is all that's promised! I bought the 3-cup carafes with wood collar based on the glowing reviews. Also invested in four boxes of filters to stock up for the year; all-in that's a lot of money for "morning joe", but I prescribe to the old notion that life is too short for bad coffee.Yep, the coffee is great. But the clean-up process is extremely annoying in that you must untie the leather thong and remove the wooden collar sections to fully do the job. You can just rinse the interior after each use but then exterior stays a little greasy. Chemex advises that the wood should not get wet. Still the yield from the system was good enough to warrant the extra bother. Then, after three weeks use, I noticed a growing fissure/crack in the glass right in the notched channel in the pouring spout. I've returned the item for credit and replaced it with the Chemex 3 cup carafe with the *glass* handle.I like that one much better already, both for cleaning ease and because the glass handle does not heat up. The wooden collar insulated the carafe okay, but still got pretty hot to the touch.I'm following the Chemex's instructions to the letter so I'm assuming the glass cracking was just one of those things. Should this new one crack within the first few months for any reason other than mishandling I may abandon the system. I hope not because it makes fine coffee and I'm a tough judge.

5Wonderful Coffee
By Dutch Oven Guy
When combined with the Chemex filter paper, this little coffee maker makes superb drip coffee. I heat 16 oz of water in the microwave in a measuring cup and pour the water into the coffee in the filter paper about 5-6 ozs at a time. The filter paper really does a great job removing bitterness from the coffee.

4Excellent coffee, convenience, and design; grind is a little coarse
By Kevin W
I bought this coffeemaker after returning my Krups KM7000. Overall, I have been pleased with this model, save for a few quirks. The bottom line is that it makes OUTSTANDING, HOT coffee with great convenience in a design that appears very durable. I have NOT had any problems with getting the pieces together and I do not find it complicated on a day-to-day basis whatsoever.PROS:-Coffee is full-bodied and flavorful. I use the 4-cup setting with about 3 cups of water and the strength set to strong. This uses the aroma feature, and the coffee is perfect.-Temperature is perfect, the hottest I've tasted from a model like this. The base WARMS THE THERMAL CARAFE when the machine goes on, then goes off when the brew is complete. This may theoretically be eliminating the effect of the cooling of hot coffee by a stone-cold carafe. On the other hand, the carafe is highly insulated and it may be doing nothing. The bottom line is that the temperature is perfect, the coffee is still hot even after adding cold milk. The coffee remains hot for quite a while in the thermal carafe.-Design is quite nice- it is self contained as opposed to other mill & brew models that have parts that swing around. The design feels very robust, there are no wimpy plastic bits. There is a piece that fits over the grind basket that has a gear which appears to rotate, likely to keep steam out of the grinder.-It could not be easier to use on a daily basis - all I do is put in THE RIGHT amount of water, put the cover on top of the brew basket, and press program (I have it programmed for the same time every day). After it brews and I pour the coffee, I swing out the basket, pour out the grinds & rinse the basket, rinse the carafe, and I'm ready to go.-cleaning is simple; I notice others complain but I haven't had any problems. See above for my daily routine; I've been using the brush weekly on the grind spout, it takes two minutes and is not messy.-The brushed chrome looks great on the counter.-3 year warranty is reassuringCONS:-The grind appears to be too coarse. Other models have a grind control to change the coarseness of the coffee, this one does not. This has improved a little after a few weeks of use, but not completely. Also, I've noticed that (through laws of physics) the coarsest part of the grind stays on top, then the finer grounds work their way to the bottom. This is probably wasting a bit of coffee, but once I worked out how much water to use it doesn't affect the strength. Overall I have not noticed that I am going through coffee faster than before, so I think some of the "coffee wasting" reviews may be somewhat overstated. On first glance it does appear to use a lot of coffee when you are pouring out the grounds, but looking at how many bags I'm going through it doesn't appear much different.-The mechanism to pour coffee from the carafe is not perfect; it works ok when pouring out from a mostly full carafe, but to get the last cup or two from the bottom I have to take the top off. If I don't it drips all over the counter. Taking the top off I can pour it without any mess.-The water indicator level is on the right side near the back. If you are putting it against a wall on the left it will be fine, but on my counter it needs to be against a wall on the right, so if I need to look at the water level I need to pull the coffeemaker away from the wall. To get around this I have figured exactly how much water to put in from a measuring cup.THE BOTTOM LINE (again):The coffee is excellent, and HOT. The design is marvelous. On a day-to-day basis it is extremely easy to use and convenient. The grind is a bit too coarse, but I don't seem to be going through coffee much faster than before, so this may be a little bit of an illusion. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ADJUST THE STRENGTH OF YOUR COFFEE USING THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WATER. I can strongly recommend this coffeemaker if you want hot, convenient, fresh-ground coffee every day. Enjoy!

5Great Coffee for a Reasonable Price
By Debra Chong
I chose this grind and brew after reading all of the reviews for this and similar machines. Frankly, I am surprised by the negative comments. This is an easy to use machine once it is set up properly (the bean hopper takes a little of effort to snap in). The coffee tastes great and the parts are very easy to clean quickly. While the instruction book is not clear, Cuisinart was very helpful on the phone. The machine does not know how much water you put in, so if you set it to grind coffee for 6 cups and you have 8 cups of water in it, it will process all 8 cups of water. Other than this small quirk, the machine is a small wonder and I do not feel compelled to go out for coffee in the morning. The thermos carafe will keep the coffee quite warm for a few hours, even when the carafe is not warmed up with hot water. Wondering why it took me so long to go ahead and buy this machine. This is the best model; my neighbor has the first generation/second generation machine which is hard to clean and has a large footprint. Save your money and buy this model! Now that I have had the machine for a month and a half: It requires some cleaning to get the fine grounds that compress and stop the grinder and ground coffee to get into the filter for brewing. I use a bamboo chopstick and a skewer to break up the compressed fine grounds that impede the machine from working properly. (Unplug the machine and put it over the sink area). I also use compressed air to blow out the fine ground particles. Still, this is a small maintenance to allow for great coffee in the AM.

1Wastes Coffee Beans - 60% increase in Bean Consumption
By charles895
This unit wastes beans.According to the user manual, if you fill the coffee bean hopper with 1/2 lb of coffee, you can expect "at least" two - 12 cup brews. I thought this was a bit conservative but it was confirmed when I made the first pot of coffee. I set the machine for 12 cups and watched as almost half of the beans disappeared on the first pot.I figure it uses almost 1/4 lb of beans to brew a full pot (12 cups of 5 oz coffee). This is about double what would be used if you followed the directions when using a manual grinder (one scoop of beans per cup using the scoop that comes with this coffee maker).I think Cusinart kept the grind at very coarse level to ensure proper grind flow in the machine. To compensate, they increased the amount of coffee ground. Thus it uses about 4 oz of beans versus 2.5 oz of beans per 10-12 cup pot. It doesn't sound like much but works out to 60% extra per pot.I've owned the Cuisinart DGB-600BC Grind and Brew Coffeemaker and Melitta Mill & Brew Coffee Maker so this is my third unit brew and grind unit. The two previous units has manual bean fill and comparatively good control on the grind. This unit always grinds very very coarse.Pro: Large Bean Hopper Easy to clean Fill level on side (DGB-600BC did not) Gold filter basket included 3 Year Warranty Simple operation (for a grind & brew machine) Seems well constructedCons: Grind is always very course Uses twice as much beans Carafe pours slow and tends to dripThe coffee tastes OK - its not as good as what you can get with a manual grind/brew but consistent with the other Mill & Brew machines I've had. It is well built and I think the 3 year warranty is key because our other Cuisinart grinder motor lasted about 18 months, but its going back because I make about 2 pots/day and this translates into a couple hundred dollars year. Going to try the Capresso 455 or 454.UpdateI've got the Capresso 454 and love it. It can grind from super fine up to coarse and makes a great cup of coffee.

1Not impressed
By Charles P. Pedretti
I pre ordered one of the SDC850's a month ago and it showed up yesterday. Nice looking unit, but pretty por performance.Mounting "Simply grasp the top panel and pull it off" I'm 6ft 185 lbs and couldn't get the top panel to slide off, maybe some C4 would help? No problem, it can be mounted in one piece. The template doesn't have the measurements that the directions say it does. OK, figure that out and drill the holes.Using the spacers required for my cabinets I find that the only screws that will work are the longest ones - which are so long that they bottom out in the front right hole. Out to the garage to cut the screw shorter.Next I attempt to pull out the filter basket - won't come out. I pull on it hard enough to start flexing the entire coffee maker and it comes free. Turns out that the hole in the filter basket that engauges the retaining pin has a plastic "turd" still on it. Trim that off and it works well. All mounted up, give the coffee maker a try. It brews a good cup of coffee. However, it doesn't seem possible to pour that cup of coffee without getting some all over the counter.EDIT: It appears that my caraffe is defective, which is the reason for the inability to pour cleanly. The coffee leaks between where the stainless bottom and plastic top are glued together. I'll be contacting B&D warranty for a replacement.UPDATE #2: Got ahold of B&D warranty and it appears that they have no parts or even any full units in stock. New pot is on order for me with no ETA.Update #3: It's now April 3rd and Black and Decker still does not have any replacement caraffes to send. I should have returned the whole thing immediately.Update #4: May 5th and still no caraffe. B&D's warranty service is unimpressive to say the least.Final Update: May 15th finally received a complete replacement unit from B&D. Thankfully this one doesn't leak.

5I Love the Black & Decker SDC850
By Linda S. Marks
I got the SDC850 and installed it immediately. I have owned 4 over the last 19 years. My favorite was the GE thermal carafe (that later became black and decker) that hung from the coffee maker. Well this is just like it, except for the fact that the GE had a glass thermos type carafe and this one is Stainless. With the glass one I used to make coffee every morning and it would still be warm 9 hours later when I got home. Anyway, the SDC850 is a real nice replacement for the old spacemaker. The mounting bracket took some extreme strength to remove so it could be mounted. The template used to drill holes was a bit off, nothing that larger holes couldnt fix. This unit has a larger LCD display and LED indicators. One feature that I used to dislike was not being able to tell if the coffee maker was on. This new coffee maker addresses that. A nice bright blue LED lets you know it is brewing. The other nice feature is a blue led that stays on for 20 minutes after the brew cycle completes, thus letting you know its fresh. The unit is very high off the counter allowing for more counter space and since the carafe hangs from the unit, you do not have to leave it hanging thereby creating even more counterspace. I read all the other review about this unit and except for the mounting issues, I have had none of the other issues others have spoken of. It took years but I am happy B&D finally listened.

1another person not impressed
By Jon Zimmerman
I just received my coffee maker and installed it. I actually only give this 1/2 a star for looking good.Screws were either too short or too long. I had to cut the long ones down, file them and die the threads to make them work. I also had to fabricate extra spacers in between the top of the maker and the cupboard for the unit to fit securely. There aren't enough spacers provided. BIG HASSLE!The carafe leaks in between the metal and the plastic when pouring. The water reservoir is too large (surface area) and flat to correctly measure the right amount of water.Clock doesn't have a backlight. Is this too much to ask for?My old coffee maker is a black & Decker, it's been very good to me, just old and out dated for my kitchen, even in it years of service it still brews a much better cup of coffee than this new one. Also, I was surprised to see in the instructions that it should be "unplugged from outlet when not in use". So I'm to reset the clock everytime I use it? I don't think so.I hate it when I feel taken. I guess it's a lesson learned, This is definitely not worth the price I paid. If I can't get a refund, I'll throw it away, eat the $$ and not buy B&D again.

5Better Get Them Now
By A. Silver
These filters get 5 stars because they appear to be the ONLY filters available for the 4 Cup Mr Coffee Maker.I bought my coffee maker at Target, couldn't find the filters for it and thought, oh well, I 'll just get them at the supermarket. Not available at the 4 markets I checked. Then I thought, I'll get them at [...]. They don't carry them. Then, I tried MrCoffee.com. Nope. I called the 1-800 number in my owners manual and customer service told me they no longer make filters for this machine and that I could purchase them at any supermarket. Maybe at her local supermarket in India, but not mine in Pennsylvania.So....if you just bought this coffee maker like I did, don't throw out the box or the reciept as quickly as I did.Or, you can do what I'm about to do, and purchse as many as these filters as possible (they don't make a gold filter anymore either!)

By J. St Gerard
(Edit to my own review. Pictured is the brand name, I was suggesting the plain generic pleated 4 cup coffee filters much cheaper, easy to find, and work just as well if you are pinching pennies like many of us are. And they work fine also in a 2 cup maker.....)I've had several 4 cup coffee makers, one was a Mr Coffee that conked. Some called for cone shape, however these can be used in any type, and I prefer paper over the gold mesh permanent ones that make a more acid taste coffee. Now I have a new even smaller 2 cup maker, Brew 'n go, very small included mesh filter, these work fine too, just scrunch them down. However, I just found this size in Walgreen's last week, store brand, had a coupon for 200 for 99c. I should have snapped up a year supply. When I couldn't find this small 4 cup size before I got the 6 cup size and cut the tops off with a scissors, or just use a paper napkin which I have to do when I can't find small ones. I've bought this size at Target before but they don't stock many so it's now and then. When you rinse the filter basket and put one in while it is damp, they mold in place easily, even the 6 cup ones.Hope this helps if you have Walgreen's. Found at Safeway too, but they are always the store brand if you dig thru the shelf and get lucky.

5Mr. Coffee 4-cup Filters
By Steven Snyder
I have had trouble with many 4-cup filters that are commonly available in the grocery stores. They do not always conform properly to the filter basket and allow much of the hot water to drip directly into the pot. The Mr Coffee filters maintain the correct degree of stiffness and always work properly.

5Nonsofisticated, but very effective
By Enigma
This device does not have any of the bells and whistles that you come to expect from a coffee maker. What it does, however, it does well. All you need to do is to pour very hot water over it, once you add coffee, of course, and you can expect to have a really hot cup of joe. I consider its best features to be its simplicity and the ability to make very hot coffee.

5Love it!
By Julie Patrick
I use this every day to make myself one cup of coffee. This is a great idea. I sit this over my cup and put in a filter and some coffee and pour hot water! The best freshest tasting coffee ever! You can control how much coffee and water. I gave half away as gifts and I kept the other half. When I am done, I throw it in the dishwasher and it comes out clean. It is much better than a coffee maker in my opinion. It doesn't take up room on your counter and you don't get limescale buildup. The only disadvantage is heating up the water before pouring but it's worth it.
