Sowden Oskar SoftBrew Coffee Maker with Scoop, 4-Cup

Product Description

Using hi-tech photo-etching technology, Sowden has developed a micro-thin filter with more than half a million microscopic holes giving outstanding filtering ability and making it possible to produce what we call SoftBrew Coffee. Put your preferred amount of ground coffee into the filter and pour in hot water, just off the boil. Let it brew for four to eight minutes and your coffee is ready. It is that simple. Nothing to worry about except the hot water. We have followed our principle of reducing things to a minimum in order to make coffee brewing the simple treat it is supposed to be and bringing out the natural flavour of coffee. The new Sowden SoftBrew filter is definitely an easy way of brewing an excellent cup of natural coffee.

2I returned it.
By ChicagoCPA
I really wanted to like this device. It received good reviews from some respectable coffee "experts" and it seemed to be a nearly ideal setup for making consistently great coffee and it seemed easy to keep clean. Our drip coffee maker broke and I was looking for an alternative that was easier to keep clean and more landfill friendly. However, this pot just requires too much effort to get good tasting coffee from it. I came to the conclusion that method is flawed and I ultimately returned it.The reason this CAN achieve so little sediment is that after 4 minutes, much of the sediment has settled to the bottom and the way this thing pours, the sediment slides into a pocket towards the front and does not easily pour out of the pitcher (cool design this part). If you follow the instructions, you will get great tasting coffee with some particulate matter, but not too much. It will be weak and your 2nd cup will be room temperature, but good tasting. If you preheat this pot, I found that the sediment increased dramatically, even at the coursest setting on my Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder. We did not like it.Getting all the coffee grounds out of a cylindrical filter this large is a pain to do each and every day and if I had to live with water restrictions, this would not be the way to go. Perhaps if it were rectangular to allow the water to flow thru from the outside or if the holes were smaller? As it is, 80% the water just flows around the filter if you rinse from the outside and if you rinse from the inside, not enough water stays in the pot to wash away the grinds.Since I returned it (about 7 months ago), I have been achieving the same effect every morning by simply putting the coffee grinds into an empty preheated $2 porcelain pot and pouring 205 degree water over the grounds, whisking it up a bit, let it steep for 30 seconds, then pour this cowboy style coffee thru a metal filter Fresco Cone Shaped Coffee Filter inside a silicon Java Drip Coffee Maker into a pre-heated thermos. A #4 metal filter is MUCH easier to clean and the entire setup costs 1/3rd the price. One advantage to this method is that it is easy to brew 12oz or less with no negative effect on taste. On the Sowden, the filter does not reach the bottom, so you still have a minimum amount of coffee that needs to be made.Another advantage to using a $2 pot: it allows me to use a paper filter when I want to get ALL the particulate matter. Although this stops the oils from getting thru, most guests just do not want any grounds whatsoever in their coffee. In short, the Sowden is overly expensive, difficult to clean, has no allowance for paper filters, and the coffee quickly gets ice cold.

5Great little coffee pot!
By lablanche
I love this little pot. I ordered the 4 cup, and make coffee and tea in it every day. I find I use a full 6 scoops of coffee to brew, but I am measuring whole beans. I have a tiny kitchen, and I am the only one in the house who drinks coffee or tea, so the smaller size fits my needs. If I have guests, I just make it stronger and dilute it with a bit more water. As is, it makes three of my mugs of brew. The coffee is wonderful. I have a problem with acid reflux and prefer black coffee, and I find I can usually drink it that way in the Sowden. I have yet to make the cold brew, but will try that when summer comes around. One thing I should add is the filter needs a good washing and rinsing because it does harbor little bits of coffee, but a soft sponge will do the job. I used to use a French press, but this is my new coffee pot of choice. No filters, not complicated or messy to clean, simple. And I can make tea in it, too. The instructions say not to microwave, but I think they meant with the metal filter. I just remove the filter, fill the pot with water, and it's fine. That compensates for the cooling of the water if you pour it over the coffee in a cold pot, so you can brew at the recommended temperature for optimum coffee brewing.

5This is a keeper!
By Now and Zen Girl
Makes great tasting hot coffee with almost no effort. Has a small footprint and looks stylish enough to leave out between uses. Really easy to clean; but basket needs washing between uses, contrary to instructions which say to just rinse. If you wash the basket by hand, be sure to rinse, and rinse, and rinse. Those micro perforations can hold soap as well as remnants of grounds. For iced coffee, the recommended amounts make a very weak brew that tastes fine but thin. Use at least twice as much coffee for full flavor. This has replaced a Melitta cone-topped, glass coffee maker; SoftBrew doesn't need filter papers, is much sturdier, and takes less room to store. When the 4 cup size becomes available, I'm going to order it to use for breakfast coffee, even though the 8 cup works well for smaller quantities.

IQ Innovations 51552 Fine T 4-Cup Gourmet Tea Machine

Product Description

Making a cup of tea has become an easy, every-day ritual for many people, but now making perfectly brewed gourmet tea can be as well. This elegantly designed 4-cup tea machine works with any type of loose tea and features seven different settings, each with its own preset temperature and infusion time. The fully programmable unit automatically and precisely controls the water temperature and brewing time, while its simple push-button controls and digital display make for effortless operation. In addition, the unit's 24-hour programmable timer allows for waking up to freshly brewed hot tea or for having a pot ready after coming inside from a brisk walk on a beautiful Fall day. Other highlights include variable water temperature from 160 to 205 degrees F depending on the type of tea, a removable infusion basket and filter that swings out for easy cleaning, a hot plate that keeps the tea warm for 30 minutes, and a countdown function that turns the machine off after 30 minutes. The 1200-watt tea machine measures approximately 8-3/5 by 8 by 15-8/9 inches and carries a two-year limited warranty.

From the Manufacturer

Creating the Perfect Cup of Tea

Brewing tea is a daily routine enjoyed by millions and on the face of it, a simple process. However, brewing the perfect cup of tea is almost a science which takes into account water quality, water temperature, and infusion times. Boiled water is not considered good for making tea as the boiling process removes oxygen, making the water stale. Also, different teas must be brewed at different temperatures: for example, green tea at 160 degrees Fahrenheit, approximately 160 degrees Fahrenheit for white tea, and water heated to 205 degrees Fahrenheit is perfect for Puerh and black teas. With this in mind, it's easy to see that brewing tea isn't as simple as it seems. But, the Fine-T Machine eliminates any guesswork so you can enjoy a perfect cup of tea time after time.

The Fine-T gourmet tea machine combines the science of tea making with leading edge technology to enable you to not just enjoy, but savour perfectly brewed teas time after time. The Fine-T gourmet tea machine is fully programmable for all types of tea, water temperatures, and steep times, as water temperatures can vary depending on the type of tea you are using. The Fine-T machine takes care of this automatically.

Beautiful and Functional

Designed to brew any type of loose tea leaves, the beautifully styled 4-cup Fine T is the only electric tea maker that simultaneously and automatically controls both water temperature and brewing time with exact precision. To ensure that each cup of tea is brewed perfectly every time, whether it's robust black or oolong, more delicate exotic white tea, or fragile green tea, Fine T features 7 distinct settings that match the tea being used to its ideal water temperature and infusion time. Fine T also includes an eighth setting, a tea wash program which rinses leaves such as Puerh tea before brewing. A 24-hour clock and programmable timer makes it possible to preset brewing times, and for example, wake up to the pleasing aroma of freshly brewed tea each morning. Unlike coffee, which can be uniformly brewed at a certain water temperature, and for the same amount of time, regardless of the type of bean and roast used, tea is more complex and requires finesse in order to enjoy peak flavors and aromas.

Sleek and modern in its design, which combines gleaming chrome and black accents, Fine T resembles a high-end, programmable electric coffee maker in style and function. Simple to use, Fine T has a swing-out infusion basket to conveniently hold loose tea (one teaspoon of tea leaves per cup is recommended). Fine T's top lid lifts to pour fresh, cold water into the water chamber, which conveniently includes an outside water level indicator window for visual guidance. Additionally, the interior of the water chamber has a minimum and maximum water level mark. To operate, select the appropriate setting for the type of tea used with a push of a button. The tea maker's back-lit LCD panel will confirm the tea brewing setting chosen, showing the type of tea selected, the appropriate water temperature, and exact time required for brewing. Fine T takes care of the rest, heating the water to the correct temperature before it reaches the infusion basket, which is also heated to ensure the right temperature is maintained throughout the infusion process. Following an exact period of infusion, perfectly brewed tea is dispensed below into a heat-resistant glass carafe. A heated plate at the base of the unit conveniently keeps the tea at its ideal temperature, and is designed to shut off after 30 minutes so as to preserve the flavor of the tea.

4Great tea maker, not perfect.
By Andrew Evans
The Fine T Tea maker from IQ innovations.Good:-Makes 4 cups-Has a rinse feature for tea. Although I would like to tweak that a bit.-Mostly stainless steal and glass.-Mostly very well made.-Self cleaning, handy.-Infusion basket is full size, so the tea has room to expand. It also is removable, and easy to clean sense it is stainless steal. This was one major draw back of the Zarafina, it's infusion basket was only half the size of the amount you could brew.-Timer, it can be set the night before to make you tea in the morning!-Has an automatic function for a second brew.-Keeps tea warm for up to 30 minutes.Bad:-Very little temperature control. I though this would be the best part of this machine, with the lcd display and menu interface I assumed I would have more temperature chooses then 205 and 160. This also is to cold for some Black teas, and a bit to hot for some white teas.-It's huge! Well this really is not that bad, but it is almost twice the size of the Zarafina and does not really fit under my cupboards on the counter. Of course it does make 4 cups.-Some oddly cheap plastic parts. For example the infusion lid is made of plastic and puts off a plastic smell when brewing black tea.-An interface only a programmer would love. It is not terribly user friendly, yet it is not hard ether. It does end up being tedious to deal with.-Bad viewing angle on the LCD, I am taller, and find myself leaning over to see it clear. If it had more features, I would be impressed, but when I can not even dial in a temperature I wonder why we need it for the basic settings. That is until you use the timer for tea in the morning, then you will like it.Over all it has a feeling of a beta tea maker. A great first attempt for them, but obviously has a few bugs and corners that were cut un-neededly. You can tell they really understand what is important about brewing tea, with features including the pre rinse, but for some reason they fumble with only two temperature settings. Maybe they had internal pressure to cut costs or to rush its release? The tea comes out tasting great. Sure it is not as good as a gung fu method, but it is fairly close if you do not have time to make it by hand. So long as you don't need to brew at a temperature besides 160 or 205. If this tea maker was not so expensive, I would be more impressed, but at a retail price of $299 I would not recommend it unless you really needed 4 cups at a time, would like to wake up to fresh tea, or are independently wealthy. Now if you can pick one up on ebay for cheap, then thats a different story.Ignoring price, it is better then the Zarafina. But considering retail price, the Zarafina is a much better buy.I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

3Live the presets or you'll be lost - Andrew is so right
By Peter Boehm
Andrew's review is right on spot. I bought one and fully agree with the details in Andrew's review. The real show stopper is that you just cannot edit the programs or do any manual setting of timing or temperature and indeed the programs only offer either 160 or 205 degrees, NOTHING between.Put China White Yin Zen Silver Needle into this machine and you'll get dishwater, regardless which program you try. This tea, like many other white teas, needs 176 degrees. So, with this tea maker you have to choose your tea according to the programs available. Well, this really is not my cup of tea....

1You Don't Always get What You Pay For
By MLM
Great Idea; Nice design; If it only worked....I should have paid attention to all the other reviews that mentioned leaking or the diffuser pot that never empties. The machine leaks, is a workout to clean, and is limited in its "8" programs that in truth provide limited individual adjustment (none). The manufactuer provided limited support -- "8" weeks to to examine the product and determine if a return was in order (sounds like the future of health care on a good day).Hats off to Amazon for stepping up and taking a return of the item after 30 days of frustrting use.I purchased the Adajio Trini Tea for one third the cost; ran 5 test runs through it with junk tea to exercise the "new" out of product, and it is perfect in comparison.Stay away from this item unless you are purchasing it as a gift for someone you dislike, and are funded to do such things.

4In defense of the Grind & Brew
By currer_bell
Ye gads. I forgot all about the fierce partisanship amongst purchasers that this wee little machine invokes. Last year, I dutifully combed through all of the reviews and was almost pursuaded to look to another machine. Thank the stars I was not. Like many, I was won over by the lure of (1)the thermal carafe, (2) the auto grind&brew feature, and (3) the shininess. I also trusted the Cuisinart name and had been previously pleased with the Brew Central. I noted, however, that many writers were highly displeased with (4) the noise and (5) the mess. So, after a year, here are my experiences:(1) The thermal carafe rocks out loud. Yes, pre-heating the carafe seems to keep the coffee hotter for longer, but on the crazy work-mornings that I use the auto-grind&brew function, I do not pre-heat and find no need to, as I am out of the house at light speed. Note that the coffee is still scaldingly hot. People seem irritated/perplexed at the slowness with which coffee is dispensed from the carafe, as well as the steep pouring angles necessitated by the carafe. I am not at all disturbed by either; however, a relative in need of immediate coffee discovered that one can get faster pouring by just removing the lid. Which defeats the awesome vacuum-packed thermal hotness, but seems a likely remedy for those with a fundamental aversion to slow pours. As far as weird geometry issues, I have nothing to offer.(2) The auto grind&brew is very convenient. It has always worked flawlessly for me and really amazes and pleases guests who may rise before residents.(3) It is damn shiny.(NB: I have a lot of stainless in the kitchen and, through trial and error, have found that the Method stainless steel cleaner keeps it all damn shiny and keeps me from going stark raving from the constant buffing and rubbing).(4) The noise? Really not that unusual for a coffee bean grinder. I did not notice that it was any louder than other grinders. If the "grind" portion of the auto grind&brew is waking one too early, I would imagine that one could either pregrind or use ground beans and just skip the "grind" function. While it is intriguing to imaging a space age machine with stealth grind mode, I would urge potential buyers to neither expect silence nor let lack of silence keep you from buying this machine.(5) The ire over the mess was what nearly kept me from purchasing this maker. And I completely forgot about the issue until just now when I re-read some of the reviews. I guess that I don't understand what "mess" they mean. There are seven parts to this thing that I clean: carafe/lid, filter/basket/lid, and grinder base/lid. I rinse the carafe and filter with hot water and clean the rest with hot soapy water. It all takes approximately 2.5 minutes. I never have to clean the rest of the machine. I usually tilt the top-loader lid open to let condensation out after brewing is done. I occasionally wipe the inside of the machine down with a damp cloth. I have replaced the water filter a couple of times. But altogether, clean-up is not that big of a deal. Maybe others are not getting a tight enough seal on the the grinder parts?SUMMARY: I have had this machine for over a year and have never had a single problem with it. It makes delicious, hot coffee. I was almost deterred by the problems that others have had with it, but am glad that I opted to take my chances. I gave it four, rather than five stars because so many people have had problems with it. Even though I have not experienced these problems, the negative feedback must nonetheless be taken into consideration.cheers!~currer bell

5I purchased the thermal carafe version 10 cup
By Zap
- previous was the typical old plastic type with glass carafe

Good Points:- much considerable improvement in coffee taste now- the thermal carafe with autoseal until poured keeps coffee hot and no stale or burnt taste, it is double lined with stainless steel- auto shutoff of heating element immediately after brewing prevents burning of coffee and electricity bills- the 1-4 cup extra heat excellent idea- the built-in grinding process- choice of using paper filter or gold filter basket- beeping tells you when coffee is ready- does not have that ugly water level marker, it has a built-in marker where you pour water, a 3-D step ladder sort of speak- does not expell any heat or humidity from unit, well sealed- nice design and looks

Bad Points:- cannot tell amount coffee left in carafe- pours out slowly from carafe- carafe autoseal feature requires you to pour at a steeper angle to get faster flow output which still isn't fast enough for me- grinder howls for about 30 seconds when running, it does not adjust grind-time for amount of coffee beans inside, it defaults to a 10 cup grind, solving this would require some clever engineering idea- I find I have to clean more than my old machine, I clean the grinder and lid, basket and basket lid, ... the grinder does create a lot fine coffee dust which does get packed into every nook and cranny

4Beautiful machine, great coffee
By A Customer
Because of all the negative reviews, I thought I should write a positive one. I would consider myself a coffee snob and have worked as a professional barista in a coffee lover's cafe (as in NOT STARBUCKS), and I have never bought maxwell house in the can as was suggested that those of us who liked this machine did in an earlier review. My brew of choice is Peets Major D's blend, which is a full-bodied dark roast, and this makes a great cup of that.Positives for me with this machine: it looks great on my bar (which was a key reason I bought it), the thermal carafe works with or without the preheating, it does not drip when you pour it, the coffee makes a great cup and I like the four cup feature since I usually don't make more than that anyway. I don't find the cleaning to be a big issue, and if I did, I doubt I would have bought a machine with technical features. The only negative really is that the grinder mechanism is not sealed enough to provide storage--I think it would be great if they came out with a hopper/grinder/dispenser attachment where you could store a half pound of beans on top--which would mean it couldn't fit under a counter. I don't have mine under a counter though, and the design of this probably isn't conducive to that anyway. Capresso makes a good machine, but it's not as pretty as this one.

Since I was aprehensive about this machine from all the critiques, I can only suggest to those wavering on purchasing it to try the machine, read the MANUAL, don't overuse the brew pause feature, use quality beans, and don't overgrind--this is not an espresso machine. And yes, it takes a few brew cycles to flush out the "funny" taste. But if cleaning your coffee machine makes you twinge or you have low kitchen counters and can't move it out from underneath, don't buy it. This machine is not a generic "all things to all folks" as the polarized reviews indicate, so buy smart, know what works for you in your kitchen.

4Bought it for the stainless steel carafe
By Molly Nightwing
This is a good coffeemaker for those who only need a couple of cups of coffee. I use a 16oz mug and get about 1 3/4 mugs from this size carafe. I know Mr. Coffee makes good products, having had a larger version of their coffeemakers so I didn't hesitate to order this one. The stainless steel carafe was the main reason I picked this particular model - I like knowing that if I drop it, it won't shatter into a million pieces like a glass carafe would. The machine also has a timer so you can set up when you want the coffee ready but I don't use that feature. The product info says you don't need to use filters in the filter cup but I do anyway - it just makes it easier to clean when you can lift out the filter with all the coffee grounds in it. The carafe poured with no dripping or dribbling - a problem I had with my previous small coffeemaker. One thing though, I occasionally see a little water leaking from where the plastic portion of the carafe meets the stainless steel portion. This seems to happen if I fill the carafe too high when adding water to the coffeemaker. Other than that, no problems.

5Its a winner
By A. J. Galvan
Well my 4 cup Cuisinart gave out and I did not want to replace it with the same one. I love the stainless carafeand saw this . Ive had it for 6 days now and its great, the coffee is hotter than my old one, easy to use too. I like how it pours with no spills. I do need to buy the permanent filter tho. I dont like to go back to using coffee filters.Makes 1 3/4 large cups for me which is just right since I only use it in the morning. This has the clock and delay feature for those than would use it, I don't just the on switch and thats it.

3Lightweight glass, so buy one right now before yours breaks
By Grranimal
I actually love the now $17 Mr. Coffee coffee maker that this belongs to, it's just that the glass is rather light in the decanter. You may as well buy a replacement right now because eventually you'll nix it. And, you need this exact size for the valve on the bottom of the coffee funnel apparatus to work correctly. A+ for the coffee maker. Recipe for it: Yuban Organic Medium Roast Ground Coffee, 11-Ounce Cans (Pack of 3) 6½ T coffee, 3-6 oz. cups of water (to the 3 mark on the Mr. Coffee) + 4 oz. whole (Smart & Final Organic) milk = 2 PERFECT cups of coffee for 50 cents/cup. This is 90% less than Starbucks, and it's organic. Enjoy!

4Pour with lid open
By Amy Perry
I ordered this or a similar replacement carafe and was unhappy with only one thing: when I poured the coffee, it dripped down the side almost every time, no matter how I held it. I found the trick is to keep the lid open when pouring. This seems to provide enough air to make the coffee come out smoothly. I got the idea because I emailed the vendor complaining and he called me back and remarked that most 4-cup carafes made nowadays have this problem--one of engineering--and it has to do with not enough air coming into the carafe.

4It performs its duty well
By R. E. Smith
I really wish they had this with black plastic trim, but it's functionally identical to the Mr. Coffee decanter that I broke and has been serving me well for several months now. If you need an extra, or a replacement 4-cup decanter, this is the one for you.

4Awesome little maker
By P. Killion
*** Note 8/6/2012 - So I'm finally able to update this thing, now that Senseo is starting to get some product in stock. A few things to note for those new to Senseo, their majority holdings from Philips were recently sold to Sara Lee I believe, and this caused a massive disruption in production and availability for the US, and thus Senseo brand coffee had been unavailable for several months. They have also made the decision to go to online-only shipping of their coffee, meaning you will not find Senseo coffee in stores anymore. The in-store alternative is the Melitta brand pods, which fit the Senseo maker, and should be sold in places such as WalMart. Personally, since Senseo has also increased their costs of their coffee (while also jerking their customers such as myself around for months), I won't really recommend the Senseo brand anymore. Decent coffee depending on your tastes, so you will have to decide what's worthwhile to you.The review for this pod drip brewer will still stand, as it is still working just fine.***I love this little thing!Originally, we had a very nice KitchenAid 10-cup Coffee Maker in our kitchen. It did its job very well, but for a long time I had been eying a Keurig machine. I'd had Keurig coffee in the past, and loved it. Looking at the machines, you'll quickly see how much of an "investment" it is. First, the machines are incredibly expensive; they make smaller models now, but even those start around $60-$70, and many don't have stellar reviews in terms of longevity. Next, the K-cups are also very expensive. Sure, you can buy the reusable thing, but if I'm going through that hassle, why do I even need a specialized brewer to begin with? It may work fine for some people's lives, but in my own, I wanted a machine that eliminated the mess and hassle of measuring quantities and looking for the "perfect brew".I purchased the Hamilton Beach Personal Cup One Cup Pod Brewer on a whim; it was on sale, and figured, what the heck, I'll try it.When I first plugged the thing it, and poured some water in the back to cycle through, it immediately spattered at me. Apparently, it can turn itself on when you first plug it in (I've purchased 2, and both did it out of the box, but haven't done it since).I'm not gonna lie, this isn't some super durable machine; its cheap plastic, but unless you're planning on tossing it across the room, it should get at least a few years life out of it. I've had our machine for about 5 months now (wow time flies), and use it daily without any problems. My wife, whom was always timid of making coffee with our KitchenAid, now likes to make coffee for herself, and sometimes for me as well to start off the morning (tell me THAT isn't worth $20). The Senseo pods are cheaper than K-cups, especially if bought in bulk.On to the product itself, it looks sleek, but pretty unimpressive. I don't know about you, but that's perfect for my kitchen; every inch of counter-space should be cherished, and this has freed up quite a bit, not to mention the visual space as its half the height of my old coffee maker as well. Its a simple one-touch operation. To make a brew, slip in a Senseo pod (or 2), add some water to the back, put your mug under the spout, and press the large button on front. That's it.As for the taste, well that's really a personal preference. I like mild, smooth coffee, which this really delivers. I liked the medium blend (a pack is included free) so much, I ordered a huge box of it! I use a small cup of water (approx 6-8oz; I recommend using filtered water), and one pod, but the machine accommodates 2 if you like it a little more "bold" or have a slightly larger mug (keep in mind, no large mugs will fit in the spout). We received a 6-piece mini-mug kit for Christmas, and those have been perfect for making a small little cup to start the day (it also limits my coffee intake, and I've been good with sticking to it).Yes, this machine isn't anything fancy, but it does its job day in day out with no issues, and works so well that we replaced a very expensive machine, and we haven't looked back. It worked so well, we ordered one for my parents at their request they were so impressed with it.If you have a large household of coffee drinkers, this may not be the way to go, but the good thing is it only takes 30 seconds or so to make a cup of coffee, and you can personalize each cup. It would make an excellent personal coffee maker at the office as well. Amazon has a pretty decent selection of Senseo pods as well. If you prefer to buy in-store, Target usually carries the Senseo pods, but doesn't have much of a selection, depending on the store. As a side note - The medium blend goes really well with Internationl Delight: Carmel Macchiato Creamer (don't get the skinny though, that's pretty...unimpressive). Have it practically every morning; their Chai Latte is pretty good too.***Edit 10/7/2011***--------------------Just wanted to say that this coffee maker is still brewing coffee just fine, haven't had a single issue with it yet so far. Still have the daily routine of small cup of coffee with International Delight: Carmel Macchiato creamer, its just such a great way to start the day I don't need to mess with it.One other note I will mention is that since I have recently started composting, I have found that the coffee pods are perfect for composting! After use, just throw 'em in the bin, that's all there is to it. Not everyone composts, but figure for those that do, it will be good to know; less waste, and the perfect component for growing plants (you could technically just stick a few in the ground and it helps to neutralize the soil Ph; Gardenias love having coffee grounds in my alkaline soil from my experience).

4Use your Senseo Pods
By Don Weiser
My Senseo finally died and I didn't feel like buying a new one. A friend told me about this little one cup coffee maker that uses Senseo coffee pods so I bought one. So far it works like a gem. Sure it's a bit "plasticy" and cheap feeling but it makes me a mug of coffee on demand and is letting me use my collection of various Senseo (and other) coffee pods. A small mug is the largest you can fit under the spout so be forewarned about not being able to use a tall mug. Device allows for one or two pods. I'm pleased with it.

5What a great Little Coffee Maker!!
By Miss M
I bought this coffee maker for myself for Christmas because I wanted a single serve maker, but I didn't want to pay the money for a Keurig. Imagine my surprise when I got a Keurig from my husband for Christmas....but I also got this. So we set up the Keurig and I put this away. Shortly after Christmas my grandfather who lives with me entered his final journey with cancer. I moved into his apartment to care for him 24/7, and I opened the Hamilton Beach so I could make a quick cup of coffee during the night while sitting up with him. I was shocked to discover that this little $20 coffee pot makes just as good coffee as my $150 Keurig.1. It doesn't brew as fast as a Keurig that is "ready to go"...but it takes the same amount of time to brew a cup of coffee as a Keurig that has been "off" over night and you have to wait for the water to heat up. In my opinion, it is still faster than brewing a "traditional" pot of coffee.2. I don't like really strong coffee, so if I'm using a smaller mug I can get away with using 1 pod of medium roast coffee. I've read some reviews of people who think 1 pod is too weak...I think that is a taste preference, and also depends on if you are using more water for a larger mug or not. Just my opinion and not a criticism of people who like really strong coffee. If you like coffee really strong, then 2 pods of medium roast might not work for you. Hard to say. :)3. The pods are cheaper than a Keurig. We use this coffee maker along side our Keurig, and it helps us to save a little money by alternating machines. Both make good coffee, but each machine's coffee tastes different...this tastes more traditionally brewed than our Keurig. I know that might sound odd, but that is the only way I can describe it (and if someone else knows that I'm talking about and knows the answer to this mystery, I'd love to hear it!) Because of the taste difference, I prefer flavored coffees on this machine rather than the Keurig for some reason. Again..not sure why, but I do.All in all, this holds it's own against a coffee maker 5 times the price. For someone who is looking for a single serve without the single serve price, this is a really good coffee maker!
