Bodum Chambord 4 Cup Shatterproof French Press Coffemaker, 0.5 l, 17-Ounce

Product Description

The CHAMBORD Coffeemaker is the Original French Press. When Bodum took over a small clarinet factory in Normandy in 1982, it was not because of the fine orchestra clarinets they were producing but because of a relatively unknown coffee maker called the Chambord which they produced as well. The reason the French press coffeemaker has become one of the most popular coffeemakers in the world is pure and simple- taste. The materials are completely taste-free so nothing comes between your ground coffee beans. This is exactly the reason why coffee tasters use this method to determine the quality of coffee beans. The 3-part stainless steel plunger has a fine mesh filter, which allows for a premium extraction of your coffee’s aromatic oils and subtle flavors. A mesh filter allows this flavor to be delivered direct to your cup and not absorbed by a paper filter. Plus, no paper filter means no waste! The patented safety lid prevents the splashing of liquids while pressing. Simplicity works best and is the reason why the Chambord’s design has not changed a bit from its original drawing. This 4-cup model (0.5 l, 17 oz.) features a BPA-free, SAN plastic carafe which is shatter-resistant. Also available in 3 cup (0.35 l, 12 oz.), 8 cup (1.0, 34 oz.) and 12 cup (1.5 l, 51 oz.) size models.

5I love this press.
By Sue
I was new to the coffee press world, but had enjoyed a few special cups at friends houses. I got really scared by the reviews of other presses complaining about the break-ability of the glass. I have 2 small kids and did not want to deal with that. This product has a "very plastic feel" to it, but it looks nice and works just fine. I highly recommend this to anyone who uses a press daily, or sometimes multiple times a day. I am able to get two pretty large mug coffees out of it if I fill it up a little more than recommended and just put the lid on for the press. I make a coffee in the morning and put the rest in the fridge for an iced drink in the hot afternoon. This size has also worked well for after dinner smaller cup (you know the little fancy cups that come with china sets) decaf coffees with desert for 4 adults.

2Won't last- carafe gets cracks :(
By Dana Wiyninger
I've used glass Bodum French presses for over a decade. (Our son is adult now, but I never worried about using a glass carafe around him. I always kept it out of his reach because of the scalding hazard from hot coffee, not that the carafe was glass.) But after breaking my last glass carafe I ordered this plastic carafe version in May 2011. It differed from the description (and my other Bodums) in having a silicone rubber 'mesh' filter rather than the standard 3-part stainless steel filter assembly. After the first few months this silicone filter became stained, and the stain won't come out. (I did stop just short of trying bleach on it, though. Vinegar soaks on the filter didn't work.) The plastic carafe also doesn't keep that clear clean look very long (at least not using the well water we used to have). I've noticed no difference in the taste of coffee over the glass carafes. However, for the last 2 months I noticed the filter plunger would stick when pushing down on it. I thought it was the silicone filter breaking down and sticking on the side of the carafe. But now there are times it won't depress at all; I looked and there is a group of small vertical stress fractures in one area of the plastic carafe. These fractures have made the inside of the carafe rough so that the press won't always work. I'm guessing that the carafe will split any day now. (Note: I used this press once a day. I washed it mostly by hand and occasionally in the dishwasher with no heat drying. Just the same as I had done with the glass Bodums all those years. I have never dropped this carafe. Our water is from wells, with no chlorine, etc like you would have on a public water system.)So this Bodum French press is now basically useless after only 9 months (really after only 7 months). I found that the plastic carafe is thin-walled and not up to the stresses of normal use. (Maybe Bodum wants people to have to replace the plastic carafes also...) I will go back to a cleanable glass carafe & stainless steel filter model or try to find an all stainless press. But I will also be looking for brands other than Bodum after this experience.

5Not so pretty, but very durable and functional
By Charles W. Long
Having gotten tired of broken glass I decided that plastic would be suitable. I was right. Sure, it isn't as attractive, but it doesn't break easily. The coffee is just as good as it would have been had it been brewed in the most sparkling crystal.
