Chemex filters are made of the highest quality filter paper. The Chemex uses a thick paper filter that removes many of the impurities that electric makers allow to pass through, making the coffee much more pure and flavorful. It also brews directly into the serving container for simple decanting and cleaning.

Wonderful coffee ... but time consuming.

I purchased the Chemex 13-cup Handblown Glass Coffeemaker a year ago this December and have used it almost every day since last Christmas. If I was going to rate the coffee maker simply on the quality of the coffee it makes, I would definitely rate it 5-Stars. The coffee produced by this maker is smooth and rich and quite wonderful. Once you figure out how much coffee to use, the coffee will come out consistently perfect each and every time.However, making a full pot of coffee requires approximately a half hour's time. Maybe a little less if you stand by the coffee maker and continually pour hot water into the filter as it drips out. Like me, you'll probably want to go and do something else while the coffee drips, and come back, refill the filter, and leave again, in which case you'll want to start the coffee about a half hour or a little more before you want to serve it.You can, of course, pull out the filter at any point and pour a cup or two of coffee, then pop the filter back in and continue filling it. Doing that, you'll can actually get more than 13-cups of coffee, although towards the end the coffee will be a little weaker.You'll also want to keep a pot of water near-boiling on the stove so that each time you fill the filter you do so with very hot, near boiling, water. Place the coffee maker itself on the lowest setting of your stove so that the coffee remains warm (and it will, at an almost perfect temperature for drinking).My main complaint about this coffee maker is in the handling of it. I am a woman with small hands. When the coffee maker is full and I attempt to pour the first cup, it is quite difficult to pour without spilling the coffee and lightly burning your hands. The wooden shields around the sides do not completely cover the glass and that glass gets very hot. I now use a kitchen towel around the sides of it when I pour that first cup. Even with that, I have to ensure that I pour slowly and have the stream of coffee completely centered (balanced) or else it will spill out over the sides.It also took me a long time--several months--before I figured out how best to use the filters and how much water to initially pour in. In the beginning, I poured in too much (to quicken the process, I'd hoped) and it would boil over and down the sides of the pot. The instructions do say not to fill it to the rim. If the water is boiling or if any of the water slips down in between the filter and the pot itself, it will bubble up and over.For people who are used to automatic coffee makers, this is going to be quite a change for making coffee. During the first month or so, I wasn't sure I was up for it, but the advantages of the coffee produced do outweigh the inconvenience in obtaining it.Foremost is the fact that there is no plastic involved. That is of extreme importance to me, and probably important to you, too, if you are researching this product. I will never go back to using a plastic automatic coffee maker.Secondly, the filters are excellent and filter out any harshness in the coffee. Compare this to a French press coffee maker and you'll definitely taste the difference. Healthwise, too, I believe this coffee maker is better, as there is concern about certain acids or chemicals in coffee that is not filtered, such as that made by a press coffee maker.The filters are a little more expensive than regular filters but definitely worth the extra expense. Regular filters are too thin. You will want to stir the grounds during the process and a regular filter will often break through, plus there are none that are tall enough for this coffee maker.Of course with any glass product, you need to be very careful when cleaning it.I do recommend this brand of coffee maker. Depending on how important 13-cups is for you, one of the smaller coffee pots may be easier to handle. I see they have some with handles now, too, which I think might be very helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one; in fact I'm seriously considering ordering a smaller one today, for those mornings that 13 cups (or more) are not needed in my household.

Best Coffee!!

The 13 cup coffee maker size is nicely balanced and handles easily. Solved the 4 mug morning coffee pour. Chemex system makes excellent coffee taste superb - and makes any coffee taste better. Well worth the personal attention to making coffee. Also, heat water in glass container - no plastics or metals to influence taste!

It is time consuming, but I am retired and have the time. I buy my coffees from local roasters. You also need the right tools of the trade: scale,kettle,grinder,Chemex, fresh coffee. Trial and error will arrive at the right grind setting, proper water/coffee grounds ratio, and infusion time .The end result is a wonderful cup of coffee. There is never any sediment or bitterness. Highly recommend! If your concerned about time, I might pass.
